The Final Whistle
As the final whistle blew and the last of the crowd was leaving, me and my teammates cringed as we glanced up to see the final score. The other team celebrated with their friends and family as we went too our coach to get yelled at once again. This was the last game of the season and we finished winning a total of zero games, probably the worst record in E.L Wright middle school history. After listening to the last speech of the season from our head coach all of the players grabbed their bags and proceeded to the locker room. As we walked down the long dirt road towards our locker room we all looked at one another and surprisingly every single one of us had a big smile on our face.

To make matters worse the team we were going up against were the defending region champs and a currently undefeated team. They were the Dent Blue devils and they were stacked with the meanest, biggest players of the whole district. We already figured we were going to lose so the record they had didn’t intimidate us considering everybody we played was meaner and bigger than us anyway. Our game plan was simple, Run the ball up the middle, Hope to get at least a yard and try our best not too fumble the ball. Scoring wasn’t even in our minds because the Blue devils haven’t given up a single point all season. They were ferocious on defense and was by the far the most difficult opponent we would face all season. As we prepared for our future death, all 17 of us, somebody spoke up after coach got finished talking after our last practice. “As long as we play our hardest we can win” said the person.
