Losing a game is not that bad but losing an entire season is disastrous. It takes a toll on one’s confidence and makes one lose their interest and ability in that certain sport. And that is exactly what happened to me during my eighth grade basketball season. Although I wasn’t too good at basketball to begin with, I did have high hopes for our team. I believed my team and I could win conference this year, my last year at Glenside Middle School. We were a distinct group of kids from different cultures and ethnicities, the only thing we shared was a common goal.
8th-grade basketball tryouts finally rolled around. I had been practicing for a whole year, but still felt so much further behind than the rest of the kids trying out. I knew I had to try my literal hardest to make the team. Our tryouts didn’t start till after all the other grades had their practices or tryouts. We did not start till 4:30 p.m., and I stayed after school to practice even more. Every day in tryouts I would try my hardest, and I would even try to stay after tryouts to ask the coaches what I needed to work
The scariest thing that I have ever experienced was dislocating my knee during my high school basketball game. While attending Forestview High in 2013 the second game of the season, I acquired my knee injury against Highland Tech. I was very excited about the game because I worked very hard to take a senior spot and was finally getting the opportunity that I was waiting for. Everyday during practice, I gave my all, all the blood, sweat, and tears that I experienced I just knew it was my time. Tuesday, November 22 we get to Highland, warm up, and finally it's time for tip-off. The first quarter I get off to a rough start getting all the jitters out. I know what you are going to say high school hero yada yada but hear me out. If you took a look at my team you would have seen a bunch of skinny white kids who all were about 6 ft tall going up against guys who looked like they could grown men. During warm ups the other teams would be dunking and throwing it off the back board and we would be excited if someone touched the rim when they went up for a layup. If there is one thing that I have learned though is that doesn't matter how talented you are, if you can’t work as a team then you aren't going to be successful. Each game would come up and my team would step up to the mantle.
It 's the day before my last high school varsity basketball game as a senior… Wow four years went by this fast who would have imagined this day would have came. All day I was thinking about the season ending. This game meant everything to me, it wasn 't any ordinary game. It 's a section game! Win or go home.. With it being my last high school game I wanted to close the chapter knowing I gave it my all. Practice was probably the most intense it 's ever been for me. Emotions were flaring and we were all on the grind.
All throughout high school I played on the softball team. Proceeding the season before where we went undefeated with a district championship, my senior year we were supposed to be unstoppable. We received a few new players to add on to our army and the entire school was counting on our run to state. I was so excited to have an amazing end to my high school softball career, but unfortunately my dream was cut short when we lost in the first round of districts. I did not know that loss would change me the way it did.
I wanted to give up but I didn’t because I knew I wanted to be better and that’s what I set out to do. I know it all got better when I got new equipment but it took a lot of not giving up getting where I was my senior year. My team started off the joke of the division and we came back because we wanted to be the best there was so we did and we came back to wipe away the competition. I would have never felt the adrenalin and joy of making it to districts if my team gave up and didn’t push through it. I ended off with a 203 average and I shot my highest score of a 275 all because I didn’t give
I take pride in winning and learn from losing and respect my opponent. I see the pride my family takes while watching me play and this feels right. Growing up in a family where everyone played sports, who were all competitive and unwilling to give up on anything and who wanted to win and finish the job no matter what the conditions were, I feel, has started to prepared me for the challenges I will face at Saint Francis High School. But most of all I will bring an open mind. One that will hope to see first hand the ways of a Holy Cross high school and will learn over the next four years more of the schools traditions and with the assistance of teachers and peers.
Once again, the next year, I was on the All-Star team. This time we were all determined to stay in the tournament and win the championship. We started off lousy, though, making four errors in the first game and losing 4-0. We now had to win every game and beat the last team twice. We did defeat every team we went up against, including the team that beat us the first game, and once again ended up in the championship game.
Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. While being a moderately proficient player on a tiny, parochial-conference team seemed like an accomplishment to me, nothing at such a small school could have prepared me for the competitive environment of a public school with thousands of students. When I attended the summer basketball program at the local high school the summer before eighth grade, I was ill-prepared. The girls were more athletic, more talented, and more numerous than I had any idea to expect. My supposed skills paled in comparison and I became a bench warmer next to a girl who was only there because her sister was on the varsity team.
Never in a million years would my freshman self believe this. I finally had a purpose in life that'll benefit both my team and I. On the Laurel Spartan basketball team, everybody played a role in helping each other, and that's what we did, not only did I improved my skills in basketball but education wise. For me, the season was over before it began. I had failed my coach, my parents, and myself. I saw little playing time during my junior season and my frustration grew. I wanted to quit but I realized that would not help anything.
we ended the season 15-7 losing to a top ranked team in the district semi final game. ultimately I was happy with the season for i felt i was playing with the best group of guys in the state, but i didn 't know if I was gonna continue to play the very sport I love. I had no offers from any college universities. I believe God used that season to humble me for he had something greater in store. I soon receive word from Coach ellis of Moravian Prep expressing his interest in having me play for him this upcoming season. i had no clue what prep school was but it in fact granted me another year to play basketball at a high level in hoops of earning a scholarship the next season. The lord showed me that in the times where we feel rejected by man, is really God trying to tell us he has something better in store. that lesson right there is what helped me grow as a young

When I first started high school, it was difficult for me to learn things. Things that seemed natural to my peers wasn’t easy for me to come by.
