Personal Narrative: My Journey To High School

When I was entering into High School, I tried to join as many clubs as I can, since I wanted not only to be superior in grades, but also extracurricular activities. So as usual, I joined Key Club. At first volunteering at the events was fun, but as I went to more events, it felt as if it was a chore. I did not feel any passion; it was rather tiresome. My sister asked if I wanted to join the club that she recently create at my school, which helped special needs students at Hope School with events such as Hope Homecoming, and Hope Prom. I began to make personal connections with many of the students at Homecoming. When the event was over, I was, for the first time, disappointed. This was the first event where it did not feel like a chore; it was actually something I was genuinely passionate about. So the next year when I was given a board member position I focused solely on volunteering for Friends 4 Hope. Every Thursday was my favorite day of the week, since there were Game Days where we can play games with a small group of Hope students. Soon after these students slowly began to become my friends. To me I was finally glad to be comfortable around my new friends, but to them it meant a lot more. They never were fully accepted into society as regular people, and our club was able to encourage integration of that. Now the President of Friends 4 Hope, I am proud and glad that I have dedicated my time to making friendships and volunteering with the Hope students. Working with Hope School has allowed me to develop into an excellent communicator and leader. For the first time I loved what I volunteered for. I did not care about the hours, I just wanted to change other’s lives, and with my 4 years in Friends 4 Hope, I believe I did just that. From this experience, I can apply it to other endeavors I may
