Personal Narrative: My Experience At Jamaica High School

I became apart of this world on the morning of May 20, 1994 at 8:15 am. I was born at St. John’s hospital in Queens, New York. My early childhood years were spent growing up in South Ozone Park, Queens. My family and I lived with my grandparents in their home for about thirteen years. Also, in that neighborhood is where I attended Catholic school from kindergarten through eighth grade. As a young child, I was brought up in a christian household, which was family oriented. I attended Sunday school as well as church every week and was a part of big celebrations and occasions around the holidays. I’ve been this way since early childhood, so not much has changed. However, as an adult I’ve watched myself mature into a more self-confident and disciplined person. I believe there should be and equal balance between having a good time and being self-controlled. During my teen years I wasn’t the most sociable or active person. However, I attempted to break that cycle towards my last year of high school. My high school journey began in September 2008 where I attended Jamaica High School in Queens, New York. After a few ups and downs I successfully finished high school in January 2013. My years spent in Highschool fashioned me into always remaining motivated no matter what. When it was time for my college experience I chose to attend Queensborough for it’s great reputation and the courses the college offered. I started my first semester in the Fall 2013. I’m pursuing a major in criminal justice. I’ve always dreamed of having a career in law enforcement, initially starting off as a police officer. I’ll be starting my first semester at John Jay in the spring of 2017. This statistics class is the last course I need to take in order for me to graduate. I’ve struggled with math, quite a bit, but I’m still anxious to see what this course will bring. I’m interested in seeing how we can collect data for the use of math. In my opinion mathematics is the collection of numbers, shapes etc that we use to make a statement true. Mathematicians solve problems with the help of different concepts. They also create new mathematical concepts and rules on how to solve various problems. Math is important to my education and career plans because I use math on a daily basis. My first semester I took remedial math which was difficult for me. I took the class with the mindset of just trying to pass, which resulted in a failure. The professor for this class was great, but I didn't have good study habits. The next semester I took the class again and passed it. I payed attention in class and developed good study habits. The only difference with this class was that it was partially online. The online homework gave my grade a boost. Also, the professor was helpful and explained the tough topics
