My story starts like many others around this world; unfortunately being raised in a poor situation. I grew up in a single parent family, with my five other siblings. From a very young age, I was determined to succeed at any goal I ever dreamt of. Seeing my mother struggle inspired me to work hard and go after what I wanted in life. I didn’t have the money like many others did growing up. I had to work multiple jobs to put myself through school and pursue the activities and social outings of my youth.
Since I was a kid, I have always been fascinated by the world and it’s many cultures. Although our family never had the money to travel abroad; I was always eager to explore the world. At the age of 16, I saved up enough money to fully fund a two-month trip to Guatemala, so I could Spanish and volunteer.
To this day, I am so thankful I had to go through these life experiences, because it is those struggles, and those hardships, that define me as the person I am today. I believe my confidence, international, and life experience will add a lot of value to the academic community of Hult....
In the summer of 2014 I found myself about to embark on an adventure to South America. Specifically I was to visit the country of Ecuador . My entire life I have always been fascinated with the different cultures that are prominent around the world. Finally I was about to get a taste of what life outside the united states was like.
While many believe that my circumstances make me unlucky, I am proud and happy to have been blessed with such an opportunity. It’s no doubt that there were many hardships and struggles that me and my family had to face: I had to leave my friends and home, adjust to living in a new country etc. But those hardships have only made me stronger. I’ve gained more friends, experienced diversity, and etc.

I can accomplish many things and that my future is bright as long as I continue to be resolute. My tenacity has been the driving force of my determination and success. I plan to fund my college education through scholarships, Federal Student Aid, and work study. My open mindedness and ambition have given me the ability to not be bitter about the past. As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive health care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.
My parents left everything they knew, their family, the street they grew up on, practically their whole lives, to move halfway across the world to an unknown place where opportunity lies rampant. I don’t remember being away from my father for a year while he worked in the US, I don’t remember living basement to basement. Moreover, I used to look at money as I looked at the stars, out of reach. Except now that I’m going to college, it’s up to me to jump. My parents raised me to only look at my peers and see if they needed anything, not look at my peers and yearn for what they had. Admittedly, I would always want more, I suppose this is the human condition, to never settle for what one has. To combat this, I would watch the History channel or even listen to Mo Money Mo Problems by Biggie. I learned at a young age that greed leads to the downfalls of individuals and even societies, to grow, one must undergo struggle, and depending on how one approaches this struggle, leads to the improvement of oneself. This acknowledgment allowed me to feel like any other kid, just one with fewer options, but nonetheless, still a road ahead of me. Having known of my parents’ stories made me grasp that I didn’t start from the beginning, but instead a continuation of the road my parents began. In a way, I feel as though I am living through them.
Interacting with peers of different backgrounds and upbringings through various clubs or volunteer work, helped validate that helping people with their misfortune is what I need to do. It is the drive behind my passion that helps me make the Dean’s List every semester and land multiple internships to excel my career. Being determined and academically focused pushed me be able to handle a high GPA, participation in clubs, serve on executive board of a nationally ranked sorority and be in an honors society. I am motivated to achieve my goals and work hard through adversity, making sure a piece of my grandmother is with me by wearing Revlon Red
Moving from a highly diverse community to a less diverse community has to be the weirdest yet interesting culture shock I ever had to deal with. As a young child, I did not know about the outside world. I thought everyone rides the bus or the metro, graffiti on the wall is normal and traffic wouldn’t matter as much since everything I needed was within walking distance sometimes. There were shocking things I learned once I moved to Nebraska.
All my life ,I’ve always wanted to be someone in life who can actually make a difference to this world in a positive way. Ever since I was a little girl I pushed myself to always best I can be just . I lived in a town outside Los Angeles, California , it was called Van Nuys,California.The elementary school (Kittridge Elementary) I had went to was in a low income area, mainly spanish community had lived in the area I was living in at the time .I had a lot of friends (mainly mexicans) I focused a lot on being on time for school , staying on task in class, and finishing my homework. At such a young age I had felt such ambition and was doing very good for myself. At the age of 10 was when reality start to really hit me , even though I was very young I started to see things differently.

One of the proudest moments in my life was receiving my undergraduate degree in the presence of my grandmother and mother. This meant a lot to myself and my family because I am the first of my family to graduate from a university. My grandmother never received a formal education and my mother was unable to pursue higher education. As I sat in the auditorium, I reflected on the past five years of my life pursuing my undergraduate degree. I had a moment of clarity and calm and came to appreciate what I had accomplished and the obstacles I overcame.
“Why don’t you use your locker? You’re going to have back problems before you even graduate”. These are words that are repeated to me daily, almost like clockwork. I carry my twenty-pound backpack, full of papers upon papers from my AP classes. The middle pouch of my backpack houses my book in which I get lost to distract me from my unrelenting stress. The top pouch holds several erasers, foreshadowing the mistakes I will make - and extra lead, to combat and mend these mistakes. Thick, wordy textbooks full of knowledge that has yet to become engraved in my brain, dig the straps of my backpack into my shoulders. This feeling, ironically enough, gives me relief - my potential and future success reside in my folders and on the pages of my notebooks.
During my freshman year of college, I had met one of my best friends, who go by name Jill. (She lives in New Jersey and while I live in Pennsylvania) I found it to be strange that sometimes, it feels like we have grown up with one another but in reality we have only one another for four years and I couldn’t be more thankful. My journey started the beginning of sixth grade. I lived in the house that consisted of four people: my mom, my dad, my little brother, and me. I was used to having my own room, and my own closet. Half way through sixth grade my life changed. My parents got divorced. I did not realize how much my life would change when we moved into my aunt’s house until my mom could get back on her feet. I went from living with a family of four to living with a family of eleven. Things started to become extremely surreal when I had to learn how to share with my cousin, Kacey, and share a bathroom with ten other people in the process.
