Peace and Peacemaking
Both the XIV Dalai Lama and Aung San Suu Kyi, as leaders in their struggle for freedom, have faced tremendous hardships and oppression. Their situations are similar in that they and the movements they represent are being oppressed by violent governments and they both choose to respond based off of their Buddhist backgrounds. The Dalai Lama does not discuss the Tibetan situation at great lengths in his book Ethic for a New Millennium, because it is a general book that outlines some guidelines of how to live life. Suu Kyi, on the other end of the spectrum, dedicates much of her book to the Burmese National League for Democracy and its responses to SLORC.
The Dalai Lama, when dealing with the Chinese or general public, emphasizes the loving nature of all people, that true freedom comes only from our struggle for inner peace, that our actions have consequences outside of ourselves, and that in order to transform our suffering we need to focus on others. A Separate Peace is a coming of age novel in which Gene, the main character, revisits his high school and his traumatic teen years. When Gene was a teen-ager his best friend and roommate Phineas (Finny) was the star athlete of the school.
The following April, he signed an enlistment for the duration with the 8th Connecticut. They began to advertise the recruitment of the long-term services since the short-term services seemed to be doing no good for the army and the cause. Another issue with the semi-militia regiments was that they obliged Washington continually to rebuild the Continental Army while actively campaigning. Washington expected these new long-term regiments to create a more respected army, but had to use militia as auxiliaries throughout the war as a result of the lingering shortage of Continentals.
A Separate Peace is a coming-of-age novel about two boys at boarding school and their friendship during World War II. There are three significant scenes of violence that occur in the novel; however, the core of the plot is based upon one. The first and most poignant is the incident where Gene, the narrator, jiggles the tree branch while he and Phineas, his best friend, are preparing to jump, causing Phineas to fall and break his leg. The next scene of violence is when Quackenbush calls Gene a lame and Gene pushes him into the water. Lastly, Gene pushes Leper out of his chair while visiting him after he is accused of causing Phineas’ injury. All of these occurrences contribute to the overall meaning of the work.
Throughout the novel, A Separate Peace, the author John Knowles conveys many messages of symbolism. The symbolism can be found in an array of ways, ranging from internal war, to the theme of human aggression, and a variety of religious principles. The main characters, Gene and Phineas, and their story could be paralleled to the biblical story of Adam and Eve. The similarities can be seen in the way in which in both of the stories, everyone is living in perfect harmony and peace until something comes along to disrupt it. Also in how the main characters do something out of jealousy, greed, and selfishness; and in addition, how Finny's fall out of a tree relates to the “Fall of Mankind.”
In John Knowles novel A Separate Peace the quote "Everything has to evolve or else it perishes" (125), serves as a realization that instead of dwelling in the past, everything needs to move forward or else it will be left behind to be forgotten. This quote refers to the boys. Throughout the book they have to be able to deal with all that is thrown at them including all of the changes that are occurring during the war. Each boy has evolved in some way. Gene is finally learning to except his emotions, Finny is admitting the bad, and Leper the person you would least expect to be in the war joined the war.

The streets of Philadelphia are rapidly becoming a home to violent acts and random homicides. Innocent lives are taken every day due to the strong presence of gangs, and the streets are run by unruly groups of fearless young adults. Gang violence in Philadelphia is a major issue, and the citizens will never be safe until gang prevention occurs. Gang prevention is not a simple task, but with the right resources available, it is possible. Gang violence is a problem that will contribute to the collapse of Philadelphia, and it has yet to be solved throughout many generations. With gang violence on the rise, the best solution to gang violence is to educate the youth and parents about gangs and use family support to prevent the creation of gang members from the problem’s core.
Gangs have become one of the most serious crime problems in the United States. Gangs have been around in the United States for a long time. Gangs "Once found principally in large cities, violent street gangs now affect public safety, community image, and quality of life in communities of all sizes in urban, suburban, and rural areas. No region of the United States is untouched by gangs. For ten weeks I will be attending the University of London. I will enroll to take fifteen credits. I chose this program because I wish to compare British college quarters compared to my own college’s quarters. It is my hope that I can start to recognize and respect cultural differences.
