Paperclips are an everyday use in today's world. They hold our papers together, when we don’t want to use a stapler that will poke the unwanted holes into our paper. They also keep our papers organized and neat. There are many types of paper clips that were created, but only a few really were the ones. Over the many years, since ancient Eurasia, the clip has made its way through many patents, inventors, machines, and much more. Steven Pinker is currently a psychology Professor at Harvard University, and contributes literary publications for The New York Times and The New Republic. Pinker delves into the controversial topic of nature vs. nurture in the article, “Why nature & nurture won’t go away”. In this work, Pinker criticizes the holistic interactionistic view, which states that personality is derived equally from nature and nurture. According to Pinker, they fail to attest for genetic variables that might contribute to personality differences. In contrast to holistic interactionist, Pinker argues that ones genes, culture, peer group, and chanced events contribute to individual personality differences. The therapist goal is to find creative interventions to help stabilize the family to maintain an appropriate relationship in their environment. Edgar Allan Poe has been debated to be the author of the most dark and horrific pieces of literature. He was favored by many for his complex pieces of literature that have ultimately impacted the world of literature today. However, Poe’s pieces of work did receive harsh criticism before and after his death. Because Poe was generally known for his thought-provoking short stories, his short stories often received mixed reviews. One of Poe’s most arguable short stories is “The Fall of the House of Usher”. This short story was “regarded as an early and supreme example of the Gothic horror story” (Plot Summary: "The Fall of the House of Usher"). Poe himself described this piece as “arabesque” due to its ornate prose (Plot Summary: "The Fall of the House of Usher"). However, many critics disagreed with each other on their views of “The Fall of the House of Usher”.

There are many times when feminism is incorporated into song lyrics to give a sense of women’s empowerment in an audience. Alicia Keys is an American Hip hop and R&B songwriter and singer who wrote the song “Girl on Fire” that was released in her fifth studio album in 2012 (Girl on Fire (song), 2014), and was inspired by her son, Egypt. This song is about a lonely girl who is starting to be comfortable in her own skin. It says how everyone is staring at her as she goes by because everyone can see the flame burning and glistening in her eyes. In my paper, I will talk about how the lyrics in this song are very bold that can be applicable to all girls. I will analyze “Girl on Fire” using a method that was developed by Kenneth Burke called cluster analysis (Foss, 2009). Through this method, I can identify key terms in this song and put them into clusters to discover the meaning behind the key words explained: girl, hottest, and on fire.

With the high demand to participate in social media the potential for a rise and spread in “ideas, trends, rumors, memes, or anything catchy”(1), is great. This phenomenon is called “going viral” and is rapidly occurring within our society. Whether these ideas, images, or trends are purposely leaked or an accident taken out of context, memes tend to have a virus-like effect on cultures(1).

Michael Cook, the author of A Brief History of the Human Race, structures his study of the development of societies and civilizations with one predominant question. “Why did human history happen the way it did?” Well aware that society and civilization are ancient arts, Cook sketches an overview from man’s prehistoric origins to industrialization of the contemporary world. Furthermore, he brilliantly explores why human history did not begin until the fairly recent past. Modern humanoids have been in existence for thousands of years, but it was not until roughly the ninth millennium B.C. that history began to make an appearance. Cook gives a compelling explanation for why this is so. He also explains that by looking into our past many answers to man’s questions can be revealed and lead humans to a primordial enlightenment. From writing and the calendars of Mesoamerica, to the progression of scientific innovation, Cook shows the reader the lush diversity within the human experience.

In Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, the traditional Ibo tribe is a very effective and lasting culture. They are the first to introduce many systems and traditions that we still use in society today. One of the major things the Ibo tribe introduces is the judial system, respect during conversation, hospitality, strength and masculinity. In Things Fall Apart, the author wants us to understand the Ibo tribe and feel sympathy for them, including Okonkwo.
