Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born in a lower middle class family in the city of Medellin on December 1st, 1949. His brother, Roberto Escobar, always said he was caring and always wanted to support the family.(Banks) Escobar began his criminal career as a schoolboy by stealing tombstones from graveyards and selling them to smugglers from Panama. He eventually drifted into petty crime until he got hired to illegaly drive coca paste from the Andean Mountains to laboratories in Medellin. During this time, he was arrested once but had the charges dropped on a technicality.(Banks). Because of this, he took various precautions to prevent his extradition, as well as others in Colombia. One of these methods was to put hits and bounties on his enemies. One example of when he did this was on Javier Peña and Steve Murphy. These were two DEA members who were hot on Escobar’s trail and eventually assisted in his death. Escobar had put a $300,000 USD on each of their heads. This was a small town hitman's dream, and although no one ever reached them, it caused lots of turmoil and discomfort among the agents.(Green) Another time Escobar used assassinations and bounties on his enemies was when he called a kidnapping on the Attorney General of Colombia, Carlos Hoyos. Hoyas was later found on the side of a different road, dead.
