Visions of the angels, saints, and the blessed family are not experiences that all people have. Visions, which are also called miracles, and are sent to select individuals and so they become touched by God. A vision is “something seen in a dream, trance, or ecstasy; especially: a supernatural appearance that conveys a revelation.” There have been numerous miracles that have occurred all around the world to people of different ethnicities, genders, and ages. One of these miracles occurred in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The visions that occurred at Fatima can be used to confirm that there is an all-powerful God.
From May 13 to October 13, 1917, there were six visions that came to three children in Fatima named Lucia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto. They were shepherd children who ranged in ages from seven to eleven years old. One day, the children were approached by an angel while they were tending to their sheep. The angel came and told them to pray with him. He said, “Do not be afraid. I am the Angel of Peace”. The children were approached by the same angel a couple more times before they were ever approached by the Lady. The second time they saw them, only one of the girls heard what the angel spoke. He told the children to keep praying and to offer sacrifices to God. On May thirteenth, the three children set out for a town with their flock of sheep. Lucia stopped along the way and said that they should go to Cova de Iria. They eventually headed that way and as while resting after lunch, they saw a great flash of lightning on the horizon. They thought there was a storm coming their way so they started to head back to Fatima. As they reached the bottom of the hill, there was another flash of lightning and an oak tree near them suddenly became engulfed by a radiant light. Lucia and Jacinta saw a Lady of supernatural beauty in the branches of the tree. The radiant Lady talked to them near a small tree and then vanished. She spoke to them saying, “Do not be afraid. I will not do you any harm.” Francisco did not see this radiant Lady at first but, after getting instructions from his sister to pray the rosary, he finally saw the glowing figure in front of him.

Julian of Norwich is so humble and she tells us that God never gave her a sign that he loved her more than anybody else. Julian of Norwich states, “Indeed I was not shown that God loved me better than the lowest soul that is in a state of grace, for I am sure that there are many who never had a showing or vision, but only the normal teaching of Holy Church, who love God better than I do” (41). Julian of Norwich tells us that there are other people out there who have not experience such visions and only learn from the teachings of the Holy Church who love God more than she does. In addition, she also explained to us how she never received a sign from God that specifically stated that she was more loved or any more important than other people. Julian of Norwich believe people can receive God’s grace more spiritually than she can explain it. Julian of Norwich states, “But I neither can nor may show the spiritual vision as openly or as fully as I would like to. But I trust that our Lord God almighty will out of his own goodness and love for you make you receive it more spiritually and more sweetly than I can or may tell it” (41). St. Teresa of Avila did not live a perfect life, although she strived to after her conversion. St. Teresa, after living in the world, realized her desperate need for a personal relationship with God, but by no means was she perfect.

The image of the Virgin Mary seen by Juan Diego has changed the world. About forty years after Mary’s appearance to Diego, it is believed to be a turning point in western civilization. At this time there were a lot of copies of the painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe being circulated around Europe and one ended up in the hands of Admiral Giovanni Andrea Doria. The King of Spain gave this special copy to him. There were three hundred Turkish ships blocking the Gulf of Lepanto and the admiral was given command of a squadron to sail to the blockade. The Christian fleet consisting of about three hundred ships was to meet the Turkish navy head on. However, the Turkish outmaneuvered the Christian forces. It is said that when this crucial hour was at hand, Doria went into his cabin to kneel and pray before the Image of Guadalupe. By nightfall the direction of the battle started to shift. One Turkish squadron was defeated and captured causing the others to panic which lead to the destruction of the whole fleet. Fifteen thousand Christians that were enslaved in the Turkish galleys were freed. This battle marked the end of the Ottoman Empire’s expansion into the western Mediterranean.1
Events in summary: (1) Pelayo goes to throw the crabs that had entered his house during the storm to the sea in a rainy night, and on his way back he finds a very old man with enormous wings in his courtyard. (2) A neighbor woman tells him that it's an old angel that had been knocked down by the rain. Pelayo and Elisenda decide to lock the angel in the chicken coop. (3) the rumor expands and people from the whole country and even from others gets to their house to see the angel. They decide to charge five cents admission. (4) A woman that had been turned into a spider for having disobeyed her parents gets to town and people lose completely their interest in the angel. (5) Time passes and the chicken coop breaks, and the angel seems to be everywhere in the house, older each day. Pelayo and Elisenda are tired of the angel. (6) In December, the angel starts to grow new feathers in his wings, and one day, while Elisenda was cooking, a strange sea wind entered the kitchen and when she looked out the window she saw the angel trying to fly and finally flying.
Most people have heard of evil spirits and things that “go bump in the night.” Numerous legends of the fallen angels say they occurred as the ones who originally created evil spirits that plague the earth. Pointedly, one of the first texts written concerning fallen angels tells of this happening.
St. Gertrude the Great has many miracles to her name and they normally occurred through prayer. In conclusion, Even though we will never experience the sight of an angel or have a miracle to appreciate, we often forget to accept the common and normal things that we have until it is too late. We may search most of our whole lives for something, only to have it later pass us right by. At the end, just as in the beginning, a normal person is confronted with a series of unbelievable events, and fails to see this amazing moment happening in their life. In the end, the family probably goes back to their everyday lives, never truly understanding and appreciating the miracle that they had just witnessed.
St. Anne’s Parish describes “who we are” in Detroit. Many people disagree with this belief because a place of religious worship cannot describe everyone in a city. The argument is reasonable, but St. Anne’s is more than a place of worship. St. Anne’s Catholic Church is a symbol that represents the positive and negative connotations of our city. We as a city seem to forget about our past, even though it continues to linger with us. St. Anne’s is a Catholic Church originally known as Ste. Anne de Detroit Catholic Church. St. Anne’s was founded on July 26, 1701 and is the second oldest operating Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Father Gabriel Richard played a major role in St. Anne’s impact in the city. Father Gabriel Richard arrived in Detroit in 1796 and soon thereafter helped found a school which evolved into the University of Michigan. Father Gabriel Richard was an advocator of success and his part at St. Anne’s created a deep rooting in Detroit. (Farmer, 531-532)
It was Christmas Eve. I sat, huddled in a ball, behind the armchair in my living room. I was trying to be as still and patient as I could be. I remember moments where I held my breath thinking if she heard me breathe, she would leave and I would never get a chance to see her.
