I am an aspiring journalist, so I am interested in the news every day. I use social media most of the time to see what’s happening around the world. For example, I learned about Prince passing away on social media. After I saw the news on social media, I turned on CNN to see if they were covering Prince’s tragic death. We have to be careful about what we learn on social media because sometimes the reports we see are false; that’s why I turned on CNN to make sure the news of Prince passing away was true. Social media is how I learned that Paul Walker passed away and one of my favorite NASCAR reporters, Steve Byrnes. I did not have a Facebook or Twitter account when I was growing up ( I am 24). Honestly, I think the technology we have today to access the news (smartphone, my computer, TV) has influenced my perspective of the world. I don’t mind reading about news stories on the media outlets I use. We can’t think that the world is all rainbows and unicorns and hide from the news. From my perspective, we should keep up with the news and we should care what’s going on in our world. What if you don’t watch the news and something bad happened in your area? Don’t you want to know what’s happening in your area? I am constantly on social media to see the latest stories. For example, sometimes I go on the Good Morning America Facebook page to see what’s happening in the world, and they also post “feel good” stories. I know that new stations use Sensationalism and bias on certain stories, but that’s why we need to use good judgement and make sure we are not sucked into the bias stories. Sometimes I feel like the technology we have today has disconnected me from focusing on going outside and enjoying life. I love keeping up with the news, but I also want to balance that with going outside and enjoying
