Death, Greed and Their Relationship In Literature Throughout all of history death has always been the equalizer of man. It cannot be avoided or cheated, much to the chagrin of many people. In No Country For Old Men greed is the root cause of the death portrayed in the novel. The main character Llewellyn falls for his greed and it leads to his death. This connection between greed and death is found in many works of literature. In The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, Kino, a pearl diver finds a massive pearl and hides it so he can go into the city and trade it for money. Fate was a major key to why Kino did not succeed in his dreams of having a high class life that he dreams of. He is a higher killer sent after Llewellyn and his wife for the money he took from the busted deal. He perceives himself as the arbiter of fate, in this case fate has been affected by greed, and operates outside of normal understandings of justice and morality. As opposed to an a belief that God is the ultimate judge, he believes only in choice, chance, and fate. He sometimes preaches his twisted philosophy before he brutally murders his victims with a weapon used for killing cattle, leaving the ultimate decision of whether the individual lives or dies to a coin toss. While Chigurh seems like he lives above the law, he is subject to the canons of choice, chance, and fate like the other characters, as shown by his injuries in the car accident at the end of the novel. But since he is the embodiment of death he survives the crash and walks off to inflict harm on those who cross his destructive path. The character he serves as in the book is vital and is truly the peak of the theme that death can prevail over
