In the book, The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, and the short story “The Monkey's Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, both authors would agree that in these stories, if you intervene with your destiny/fate, a bad outcome is sure to happen.In The Pearl, Kino finds the pearl of the world. Kino wants to sell the pearl, in return for money, but the pearl ends up bringing the opposite of prosperity and brings bad fortune. Also, In “The Monkey's Paw”, Mr.White also wishes for money, but as he is warned, terrible things come when u interrupt with your fate. In The Pearl, Kino wants to sell the pearl for money, for several reasons. One of which is to help his dying baby, Coyotito. Kino ended up getting more greedy and wanted more and more from the pearl, that a bad ending was sure to happen. The author includes several bad events that happen, due to Kino's greed and attempts to mess with fate. For example, his baby died. This is sort of ironic because he wanted the pearl so he could make Coyotito better, but... A couple other examples of how Kino meets with disaster when his house burnt down and his canoe was trashed. On page 29 of this, Novel it says, “He knew that the gods don't take their revenge on a man if he be successful through his own efforts.” This shows that Kino knew what was going to happen, but didn't care because his greediness got the best of him. Likewise, in “The Monkey's Paw” Mr.White was careless, which ended up with him finding himself in the middle of a disaster. On pg 187, it says “...And that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow.” Mr. White didn’t care, he was warned by the sergeant, when he said to him “Better let it burn.” because the sergeant knew it was bad and would bring great pain and sorrow and problems to Mr.White and his family, but he paid no attention to the sergeants
In W.W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw” there is a family named the Whites who receive a magic monkey paw that can grant three wishes to them, but they are forewarned that each wish will have a horrible consequence. They do not heed the warning and wish for money to pay off their house debt and their son dies as repercussion for messing with fate. Mrs.White tries to bring her son back to life with the monkey’s paw, but her wish was undone by her husband’s fear of seeing their son’s mangled body. When people mess with fate and alter destiny they must also face an equal consequence for straying the path that was set for them.
The aspect of the John Steinbeck novels, The Pearl and Of Mice and Men, that is most comparable is how, in both books, Steinbeck denies the main characters of each book, Kino and George and Lennie to change their role in life or to beat fate. Steinbeck’s grim outlook of life was perhaps brought on through his early failures and poverty, because all three of the pre-mentioned characters had opportunities to change their fate or role but failed. Although it is widely alleged that destiny is by choice, there are a vast number of people who believed that it is by fate. Those who believed it is by choice follow the directions and guidance of their elders. For example, they will try to hold on to the values that their parents instilled in them and use them to guide their entire lives. Others who believed that destiny is by fate, believe that the outcome of their lives is determined by luck, and that no matter what they do or how careful they are, whatever has to happen to them must happen. These proponents that emphasize that destiny is by fate may have gotten their belief from myth such as the story of Oedipus, which is a perfect illustration of how destiny is by fate. Just like most mythical stories, the characters in this story tried unsuccessfully to change fate to suit them. However, as you are about to see, fate cannot change. It can only be redirected, but will still eventually achieve its objective.

While reading The Pearl, it became clear that an ideology is present in the novel. This ideology is not very prominent, seeing as the author only hints at it sparsely. Halfway through the book, Kino recounts something that his father told him: “.each [person] must remain faithful to his post and must not go running about.”
“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped” (Tony Robbins). Indeed, the decisions you make on a daily basis affect your destiny. Good decisions lead to a good destiny, but bad decisions leads to a tragic destiny. Furthermore, Captain Jonsen who is the tragic hero in Richard Hughes’s novel A High Wind in Jamaica makes a good example of how bad choices lead to a tragic destiny. Jonsen’s decisions that he made after the children aboard his ship cause the “…nail[s] in the coffin...” which is his final destiny (page 117).
Fate: the development of events beyond a person’s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural force. Fate has ultimate control of the future, and it should not be interfered with. All characters in stories must learn this lesson. Throughout W.W. Jacobs’ short story, “The Monkey’s Paw”, foreshadowing and symbolism are used to exemplify the theme of interfering with fate leads to sorrow and misfortune.
Readers can tell from the statement that many of the people Kino encounters after finding the pearl become bitter “friends”. At this point, Kino and Juana begin to realize that the pearl is bringing bad luck upon them. They are taken advantage of by the doctor and he decides to visit them after knowing they have the pearl. “This pearl is like a sin”(56). Juana begins to realize the pearl is bringing them bad luck, but Kino still trusts that it’s a gift. Readers can also assume that people are trying to take the pearl when Kino is suddenly attacked during the night. “Blood oozed down from his scalp and there was a long…”(56). Readers can now confirm that the pearl has changed and now represents evil. The pearl also begins to destroy Kino and Juana’s relationship as they have different opinions on what to do with the pearl. After Kino wakes up and follows Juana when she wakes up and walks out, readers know he has started to lose full trust in her. “He rolled up to his feet and followed her silently as she had gone” (58). After Kino found his great pearl bad things started happening, Kino and Juana's lives were in trouble. Two men notified in the book as the "dark ones" tried to steal the pearl, luckily Kino had been prepared and got rid of the enemies but that was not the end of the misery. While every person is born with sin, people can still have a good heart. Kino has a lot of what we would consider good characteristics, especially in the beginning of the novella. Kino loves his common-law wife and wants to get married in the church whenever he sells the pearl. He also terribly loves his son, Coyotito. That is what started this whole adventure. When Coyotito got stung by a scorpion Kino took him to the doctor, despite knowing the doctor would not see him. He went pearl diving hoping to find something worth enough money for Coyotito to be seen and treated by the doctor, little did he know that that would be where everything would start going in a down-hill spiral. The pearl in a whole is not evil just like in the beginning Kino was not evil. It was the choices that Kino made that caused him to drown in this dark abyss of pride and greed. So was it his greed that caused him to do wrong acts or was it his pride that caused him to have greed? Out of all of Kino’s characteristics, “It is his pride that is most striking, and it is his pride that brings him disaster,” (Bates 43). “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall,” (Proverbs 16:18).
