A smart man once said "It is not about the destination but about the journey itself". Life it a never-ending Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future. Looming obstacles in the life of an individual serve as molds which instill perseverance, hard work in an individual's identity and bring hope for the future. The text Divisadero by Michael Ondaatje focuses on Marie-Neige who surmounts her sudden burden and chore of running a household and a farm. When her husband is sent to prison she is singularly suddenly entrusted with all of the responsibilies of their farm. Marie-Neige despite the lack her husband and horror of a miscarriage continued to persevere without breaking down or quitting. Sustenance and resilience through obstacles in life is actually what build character and the personal identity of individuals, along with cultivating determination, and hard work. In Divisadero Marie-Neige singularly adopts the duties of the farm after her husband is imprisoned. Through her organized and concentrated efforts and with additional help of books she is able to overcome her obstacles and creates an identity for herself as a strong and independent woman.
