Note Taking Style Analysis

There are many different techniques a person can use to take notes in class. Some note taking styles are more helpful than others, but it all depends on what kind of notes a person likes writing. Three styles of note taking that are beneficial for people to use are Cornell, outline, and graph. In Cornell notes, a person must divide the paper into a column that is one-third of the page and another column that two-thirds of the page. A title is required in this style of notes. The vocab words or main ideas would go into the column that is one-third of the page and a person would elaborate on it on the other column. An important thing to do when using this style of notes is leaving spaces so it is easier to identify each main idea or topic. The advantages of using this type of notes are that it makes an easy study guide when it comes time for the test, it helps process information, and it makes a person pull out certain ideas or topics that they feel are important. These notes are designed as a web with the huge main idea in the middle and branches coming off of it that are meant to be subtopics. More branches come off of those subtopics and go further into detail about the certain idea. The advantage to this type of notes is that they are good to point out relationships, similar to the outline style notes. The disadvantages are that it gets very unorganized sometimes. Unless the person using these notes are a kinetic learner, then these notes are not very good to study from. Sometimes page space runs out, which can make it difficult to continue an idea onto the next page. In comparison to the other types of notes, these are the best type of notes if a person likes seeing webs of ideas and branches to understand
