Neo-Paganism: Modern Witches

The growing practice of Neo-Paganism in America has caused many to turn their heads. The misinterpretation of the religion has caused much of society to label the people who practice this religion as “witches”, who perform sacrifices, engage in orgies and dark magic. It’s taken years for Neo-Pagans to clear up these ridiculous rumors. Neopagans do not worship Satan. They do not even acknowledge his existence. None of them is an all-evil deity even remotely like the Satan. It is still frowned upon in most countries, maybe because of its bohemianism to worshipping the Christian God. Through ethnography, researchers are able to show the rest of society that you do not have to hide your animals or the local virgins from this community of people.
Neo-Pagans are a group of faiths bringing ancient Pagan and magickal traditions to the modern age; including mostly Wicca, Druidism, Asatru, Shamanism, neo-Native American, and many more. It is an umbrella term for various beliefs with many elements in common. Some Neo-Pagans find no conflict practicing Neo-Paganism along with another faith, such as Christianity or Judaism.
Some believe in a Supreme Being. Many believe in duality; God and Goddess. Many believe there are countless higher beings, gods and goddesses, in the cosmos and within nature; God is all and within all; all are one God. The Great Mother Earth, is highly worshipped. Divinity is immanent and may become manifest within anyone at any time through several methods. "Evil" is imbalance. Most believe there is no evil but rather that people sometimes make mistakes. In short, it allows Magliocco to take her subject's views seriously, a vital component of this type of ethnography. If the subjects see her as a threat, and a non-believer, there will be no knowledge gained through the research experience.
The Hopi say “The spirits of the buffalo and the many Native Americans killed in the North American holocaust will return, are returning, in the bodies of White people.” They believe that is why the Neo-Pagan community is building up and there are so many environmentalists, and academics working with nature and with spirit. The energies are gathering and the Earth is calling these groups to Her aid. I believe that there is a bit of Neo-Paganism in all of us if we look hard enough.
