If the movement of people, food and manufactured goods does indeed have an impact on public health, obviously the risks versus the benefits need to be balanced. It may be that the flow of these things impacts public health, but in doing so, they also bring goods to areas of the world that may not have access otherwise. So yes, trafficking of items can impact public health, but certain goods, like medications can also be trafficked, which promote public health. What needs to happen is the why behind the negative impact on public health. Once those issues are targeted, then public health will increase, thereby reducing the overall negative impact on public health that we are seeing. The increased food trade has impacted the spread of diseases since pathogens can stay on the surfaces of foods, which re then consumed by people. Further, animal matter can get in the food, or around the area where they are stored, further spreading diseases. Also, the pesticides and water the food is grown in can have negative impact on health and spread diseases, especially if the water is dirty. To reduce disease, certain national and international laws need to be placed on how food is grown and produced, stored, and shipped. Having certain regulations in place to promote health can enhance health. I think GMO's are fine. They have been used since early history, where people, including Native Americans, cross-bred corn. GMO's are not necessarily bad or unhealthy. They are simply food that have been modified, either in a laboratory directly or by cross-fertilizing foods. There is nothing unhealthy or unsanitary about that. Therefore, the benefits outweigh anything. Having more food produced is best for the world population. Having food resistant to disease is a good thing for overall public food
