The Mughal Empire was a large power based in modern day India, ruling both the Indian subcontinent and parts of Pakistan in the 16th and 17th century. The civilization was declining in the 18th century due to a clash between the Hindu and Muslim populations. The British took this opportunity to colonize the area, largely in part to benefit their own economy. The British arrival caused political, social, and economic change in India. The Indians did not adapt to many of these changes successfully and thus interrupted the transition of power. British imperialism promised many benefits to the subcontinent of India; however, the negative consequences that came with the colonizing of the Mughal Empire overarched the positives and thus drove Indians in both rural and urban areas to seek independence in the 20th century. …show more content…

The differences between rural and urban areas affected the way native Indians assimilated to the British controlled state. The Mughals were a civilization from the early 16th century to mid 18th century, who ruled throughout India and parts of Pakistan, . The Mughals were known for being a powerful civilization and effectively ruling India, largely in part to its capable leaders, who maintained a dynasty for more than seven generations. A large Hindu population existed in the predominantly Muslim-ruled empire. This original tolerance towards religious diversity led to Hindus reaching highly prestigious positions in the government and military positions. However, primarily Aurangzeb’s rule from 1658 to 1707 led to the fall of the Mughal Empire and tension between the two religions.
