AHH! It was the seventh grade girl’s ear-piercing scream that could have shattered glass, and she was right in front of us. Then all of a sudden the rest of the seventh graders were laughing hysterically like hyenas and pointing their bright flash lights directly at August’s face. From then on, I knew whatever was coming next would not be good. We were in the forest at night and it was pitch black, I could barely see anything. They started to insult Auggie and make fun of his deformed face. This annoyed me but I knew I could not take on the sinewy boys alone. Sure August was there, but he was not strong enough to fight them either. “Are you a freak, too?” questioned Eddie. Amos looked at us with deep concern. “Come on, guys, let’s go. Mr. Tushman’s waiting for us,” he suggested. August held his hand open for me to take and lifted me up off the muddy ground. As we headed for the three boys, Eddie snatched August’s hood jerking it so that way he fell. I watched in horror, my eyes widening, as August gasped and stumbled to the floor. OUCH! August looked like he was about to cry, eyes filling with tears. “Go take Auggie away from here while Amos, Miles and I finish these morons,” I quietly told Henry. He obeyed and dragged Auggie away from the battle that had erupted. I did not want Auggie to hear me and think I mistaken him for a weakling.
