There is something special about sport rivalries. It does something to the teams involved that you cannot explain. The player’s get ecstatic, the fans are buzzing, the coaches are on there A game, it is a game that you live for. Rivalries develop over time, because they simply play often, with high stakes. A sports rivalry is an intense competition between athletic teams and players. A rivalry causes great emotion. The effects of rivalry bring out the best of teams and players. You either step up and win or you lose. The winning team gets bragging rights until the next time the two teams play, which makes rivalries so interesting. Since 1960, the bitterest rivalry is the Raiders against Broncos. The raiders are known for their “criminal” character. One of my favorite NFL rivalry games to watch is the Redskins vs. the Cowboys, it always seems like they play for the division championship. “The intense loyalty of these teams' fans helped this rivalry hit a peak in the '70s and early '80s. Redskins fans hated Tom Landry, the shotgun offense and the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Cowboys fans hated George Allen, Joe Theismann and that ridiculous logo. When they played on Thanksgiving, there were more than a few turkey legs thrown at the TV in disgust” (ESPN, P2). The game that I always watch for fights are the Lions against the Bears, there is something about when those two teams play fights tend to break out. In 2013, Stafford, the Lions quarterback, started a fight that will be remembered for a while after throwing a pick he punched a Bear player. In a very traditional sense, the 49ers will always be the Rams' top rival simply because it's a rivalry that goes back so far and the Northern California against the Southern California dynamic is now back in play since the Rams moved back to Los Angeles. But a strong case can be made that the Seahawks have replaced the Niners in the eyes of the Rams, for the time being. My favorite rivalry to watch on TV is the Red Sox against the Yankees. “Some say this is merely a media creation, and it's somewhat true, since the two teams have rarely battled head-to-head for the pennant. But, remember this: the Red Sox were the American League's dominant franchise until selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees. Red Sox fans have yet to fully recover “ (ESPN, 4). Personally I root for the Red Sox every time because I am a big “Big Papi” fan. The rivalry between these two teams causes some big scuffles, when “Roger Clemens throw at Manny Ramirez The benches cleared again and Yankees coach Don Zimmer went after Martinez. Martinez grabbed Zimmer by the head and threw him to the ground. It just added fuel to the fire with a player throwing a 72-year-old coach to the dirt. The two teams fought again the next year and another brawl is just a spark away “ (Richest, 6). In the NL, I always tune into the Cardinals against the Cubs. There is no doubt that this is the fiercest competition in the NL central. Until 2015, people only watched this game if their was a record chase or some star player was doing something awesome, because the cubs just were not a quality team. The Dallas Cowboys, America’s football team, one of the most well known professional football franchises in the sport’s history. The Cowboys own five super bowl titles, which were won in ’71, ’77, ’92, ’93 and ’95. They are also home to 19 renowned individuals who have been inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame including standout football stars Tony Dorsett, Emmit Smith, and Troy Aikman. Established in 1960, the Cowboys have been a dominating force on the field and still continue to produce to this day. Forbes wrote, “The Cowboys franchise value reaches over 1.85 billion and are listed as the third most valued sports team in the world”, (Page 1). With all of this hype and world wide recognition the powerhouse from Dallas needs a venue just as prominent as the team itself as well as having the capability to hold all the weight the Cowboys name carries.

However, Glasgow, Scotland is the home of one of the oldest and most heated rivalries in the world. Two of the most prestigious football clubs in Europe, Celtic and Rangers, both call Glasgow their home. The cross-town rivals first met on the pitch on February 28, 1888. The best college football rivalries intrigue us to a point that we are on the edge of our seats for the entire game, but many people do not know exactly what makes these games so unique. Many rivalries are based off of supremacy in a certain state or in a region. Factors such as trash talking, championship contention, or recruiting implications can play into these games that appear on the schedule every year. There are games in which private schools battle it out against public schools to prove that they have earned the right to go against the public school on the gridiron year in and year out. Sometimes teams play to simply win an oversized, metal stick to keep all year. All of these can contribute to the fans paying their money or tuning in to watch these games in which history is renewed and there is a chance for more history to be made.
There are great times noted in the past. One of those great teams in the San Francisco 49ers. They have made history and are known as one of the type franchises in the history of the NFL. The 49ers are considered a dynasty to the media and fans. The 49ers are respected greatly for their Super Bowl achievements.
While the game has changed in many ways through the years it has become a part of many football fans’ daily lives especially from August to January each year. Baseball is one of the world's greatest sports and is played almost everywhere in the world. It is also one of the most historic games. The main historic part of baseball deals with the ballparks, the cities, and the teams that have been around for such a long time. Then you have the one and only Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. Fenway Park is the longest standing and is still being used of all the Major League ballparks in the United States. Throughout the 100 years of Fenway Park's existence it has been built, named, burned down, rebuilt, and a whole lot of adding on to the ballpark.
The mixture of these four factors creates great rivalry among teams chasing sponsors, licensees and fans for a fixed pool of revenue with covering high and often increasing costs.
Baseball was first introduced into the American culture, by English immigrants in the early 18th century, and its popularity slow grew. It wasn’t until the Civil War the popularity of the game spread, and both Union and Confederate soldiers played baseball during lulls in the fighting. After Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, soldiers from both the Army of Northern Virginia (Confederate) and the Army of the Potomac (Union) played baseball. Sport builds similarity by bringing people to one place creating a similarity between people of things they like to do. People find similarities in other people because they give people a chance to show who they are when they support the same things.
