Throughout my high school career, I have been through many different activities, in and out of school. An activity outside of school in which I have been a part of was, having the opportunity to volunteer at the Cedar Bluff Branch public library. When I volunteered at the library, I had a leadership role for the first time of my life. My responsibility as a leader was making sure the books were straightened and nothing was out of order. Volunteering was a great experience for me, since it allowed me to become who I am today. Primarily, volunteering aided me in intellectually developing myself. Community Service is a great opportunity to make a difference in the area you live in. There are so many ways to volunteer. Some people are given chances to do community service when they need to pay off fines for tickets. Most people simply do because they love getting involved. It’s their way of making the community a cleaner, healthier place.
It helps a person make new friends and it is good for increasing the number of people one can fall back to when they need someone to listen to their problems. It is also helpful with building one’s social and relationship skills. “[Volunteer service] gives [a person] the opportunity to practice and develop social skills” (Saisan and Smith). Another benefit is that it is good for one’s physical and mental well-being. “Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.”
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
During my 2 years as a member of The National Honor Society, I have done multiple community services. The best part of doing services is watching others smile because of what I have done to help them better their lives. When I was part of Earth Day at my school, I traveled to the historical paterson great falls. To interact with children on how to reuse our resources to help our community become cleaner. The best part of doing this is that a week after our service, the children were beginning to take small steps by picking up trash off the parks.
Since second semester of sophomore year, I have the privilege of participating in my schools National Honor Society. Every month we have a meeting and, by the end of the year we are expected to have thirty hours of community service accomplished. Along with NHS, I attended a couple School Leadership meetings, but reluctantly had to stopped due to my schedule. Both junior and senior year i have participated in the club Business Professionals of America were I held parliamentarian junior year and secretary senior year.
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it.
It was so nice to be back at Discovery, for my third summer volunteering. It hadn’t felt like summer until I walked into the door and saw all the preschoolers. This year it was very different from the past 2 years because there were so many new kids and only about four from the last summer. The kids were all very excited to meet me and were very welcoming. It was nice to see some of the same teachers, but there were new teachers as well. All the kids came up to me to find out my name and to ask if I was a new teacher. I especially loved it when I introduced myself to one of the kids and he responded “Kalala, that’s a silly name”. It was amazing to watch the kids playing and learning and having the chance to watch how they interact with one another. They’re so nice
Without a doubt the most meaningful activity I have ever been involved in is 4-H. I have been a member of the Cheerful Champs 4-H club for almost ten years. When you join a 4-H club the members and leaders become your friends and family. 4-H’s mission is to provide a positive environment for kids to grow and succeed through. With such an environment 4-H hopes to give kids confidence and empower them to do whatever they hope to achieve. Empowerment turns kids into leaders and teachers. After being in 4-H so long you learn how to lead and teach the younger members of the club and others in the community. Through 4-H I have gained a family and many qualities that I will cherish for life.
Every college student is involved in at least 7 different clubs, 5 on-campus jobs, s6 intramurals, and taking 40 to 50 credits per semester...OK, so maybe that’s not completely accurate, but that’s definitely what it feels like being a third-year college student. In reality, according to an article in GoodCall news by Terri Williams, she cites a study done by the U.S. Census Bureau, which shows that the average full time college student only spends 3.3 hours performing these activities. So where do college students spend most of their time then? A study done by Dr. James Robert at Baylor University, concludes that most college students spend about 8.7 hours
...teer experience. I highly recommend volunteering to anyone, because of all the great things it will teach and because of the positive impacts it make on one’s life. Volunteering will teach an individual many of life’s greatest lessons, and lets an individual grow into a better person. Volunteering teaches to let go of their ignorance and false notions of world problems and lets the volunteer learn about the real, and sometimes unattractive, condition of people in the world. Many people think that one person cannot make a difference in the world, but volunteering teaches a person to at least try to make a difference in one person’s life and to build on that. Additionally, volunteering teaches a person to be leader who can inspire others to volunteer. Volunteering is an incredibly didactic experience that will forever inspire the volunteer to be a better person.
A common misconception about volunteering is that it only helps the cause. Often times that aspect is the only part that is highlighted when the topic of donating time comes up. There is a different side of volunteering though. Many volunteers donate their time to help better the community they live in and the people that live in it. When they choose to do this they not only help others but they are also helping better themselves. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities.
Volunteering is an important contributor to our society. It is also a great opportunity to learn different skills, especially young people, and they will become a part of who you are. Your future employers will thank you for it, as will any college or university that you decide to apply too. It is also a perfect way for everyone to meet different people and experience different things. Volunteering not only actively will help people; it also helps the environment. Most of all, it allows you to become a better person for what you have
I would attend the school pep rallies, football games, join the school powerlifting club, and school dances like Homecoming and Prom. Although these annual school events were fun and memorable, volunteering for community service hours holds a special relationship with me. It helped me realize my passion for helping people in a socially and physical way. This passion accompanied with my hobby of exercising led me to pursue the career of a physical therapist. In general, the experiences and lessons that I’ve adopted in American Canyon High School was truly life changing, and I’m grateful for it everyday.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
