My Social Location

There are many factors that have influenced my view of society, these factors are intrinsically linked with the social and political location that I hold within society. My social location is defined by my age, race, religion, gender, familial experiences, and income. All of these factors have influenced my social location, which in turn has had an impact on how I identify myself, as well as my view and understanding of society.
My status as a young African-American Muslim female, has impacted the way I view certain situations. I was born and raised in Canada, but was raised by immigrants from Somalia. Contrary to popular belief, Islam is a religion that respects the rights of women. I was raised in a devout Muslim household, and I was raised to believe that women in Islam are amazing and powerful creatures that deserve respect, and this has had a massive impact on the woman that I aspire to be.
Many other factors have affected my social location, such as my age, race, and income. My status as a member of the millennial age group has had a massive impact on my social location, as I have grown up in time where I am able to read and study about the faults of the generations that have come before me. Being aware of these faults has given me the ability to hope and strive towards a better future.
I was once told that our social identities are similar to the lens of glasses, meaning that depending on which social identity we are presenting to society, we view the world differently depending on this ‘lens’. My social identity has given me a unique viewpoint and a special approach to life, in that I have the ability to acknowledge and empathize with the struggles of certain communities, because at one point in time that social inequality has most likely afflicted members of my social group. As for much of history, individuals have been persecuted because they, like me, are members of minority racial groups. My social location has also allowed for me to deeply comprehend the fact that social inequalities are not the result of the individual shortcomings of disadvantaged populations, but an unequal system that has resulted in certain groups being advantaged and certain groups being
