Ever since I was a little girl, my motivation to pursue a career in the medical field was evident. While other children my age watched Cartoon Network, I found more value in shows like ‘Trauma: Life in the ER’ and ‘A Baby Story.’ It wasn’t until high school that I decided I would become a nurse, specifically. I cannot say that I had a revelation or a particular experience that swayed my decision. However, ever since I began pursuing the career of nursing, I discover each and every subsequent day that it is what I was put on this earth to do.

I chose a career as a medical assistant because of the rewards I knew I would experience on a daily basis. There are many concepts to be identified with when studying any language. I will explain a few of the ones I see specific to medical terminology in this threaded discussion. Medical terminology is based on anatomy, so an understanding of anatomy will be one of the building blocks to creating a medical terminology vocabulary. Next, medical terminology is made up of compound words. If you have a basic understanding of the prefixes and suffixes you can figure out the basic meaning of the word. Once you have those figured out you can work on the root word. The most important foundational concept is not to assume anything, if in doubt research, if time permits use a medical terminology dictionary, if not ask someone. There are no do overs in real life so err on the side of caution.
I believe that I make a difference by being positive. Being optimistic is always important to me. I’m convinced that having a good attitude in school is extremely valuable. By being optimistic, I try to spread positivity to my fellow peers. Everyone has disagreeable days, but if you have a good attitude, you’ll soon learn to get over it.

From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
Record of Experience In the first day of clinical practice at week 6, I received a new patient, P.M. The patient’s admitting diagnosis was as follows: a right knee prosthetic replacement, and a multiple heart surgery history that happened about 20 years ago. Furthermore, the patient had an atrioventricular valve replacement, mitral valve replacement and tricuspid valve replacement, and other comorbidities related to the valve replacements were atrial fibrillation, cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure (diastolic), and hypertension.
I can also make a difference in the community where I live. Last year my class held a car wash to raise money for the Animal Shelter. We went to visit the dogs there and I realized that the money we raised made a difference for some of them.
With this in mind, I used my presidency in the Clements Key Club to help both the people in the community we serve and our own members to become better citizens. After the work I have been doing at Clements has come to an end, I hope to continue helping the community throughout college. I want to join organizations like Key Club to volunteer my time, but I also want to use my talent to mentor high school programs. The best way to help people and grow the community is through children.
Knowledge is continuously derived and analyzed from the experience of learners validating the truism that experience is the best teacher (Kolb, 1984). The aim of this module was to assist international students improve their communication skills which is key to a successful medical practice. This essay examines my journey through the module, sums up my experience and highlights its relevance to my career.
