My career of nursing is like the cyclical pattern of life, as time passes and situations are experienced, one is shaped into a certain individual/professional, ending up in places that never seemed to be part of life’s plan. Personally, the challenges and triumphs of providing patient centered care to help others live a healthier life, and aiming to prevent illness, is rewarding and quite humbling. As I continue to learn about opportunities to provide individualized care to patients and their families, I further understand the imperativeness of the “whole person,” which is a critical skill of a nurse practitioner. Additionally, I demonstrate commitment, leadership skills, and passion for working with my patients and multi-disciplinary team members. I have been fine-tuning my practice and immersing myself in learning through the nurse residency program at New York University Langone Health (NYLH). In addition to completing the residency program and continuing education units at NYLH, I mentor new RN’s, participate in unit practice informational meetings, and have presented and launched research findings on my clinical unit. I have developed strong communication skills and gained such strong interdisciplinary relationships with doctors, nurse practitioners, patient care technicians, and healthcare professionals. Teamwork and collaboration attributes will be useful in my preparation to become an autonomous nurse practitioner and I am looking forward to further developing my connections, challenging myself and expanding my nursing
Senior nursing students will complete a QSEN weekly clinical journal requirement learn how to self-assess their progress toward demonstrating these nationally-based competencies. The students will select a different competency each week to address and discuss how they applied that competency to patient care or how they hope to better achieve that competency as a graduate nurse. By the end of the clinical rotation each student will have had a chance to focus on each of the six QSEN competencies: patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety and informatics. The students’ reflection on their clinical experiences each week will teach them how to integrate the core competencies required before graduation. When thinking of a career I would enjoy, I kept my interests and hobbies in mind. Through life I have developed an interest for helping people, and a career as a Nurse Practitioner will allow me to do so. From going to mission trips and assisting children to lending a hand at the local nursing homes, I knew a career in the medical field was where I needed to be. To begin my research about the career of a Nurse Practitioner, I looked for information on the Choices 360 website. Then I continued my research to the Nurse.org website. Finally, to conclude my inspection of the career, I interviewed Daniel Eddings who is currently attending school to become a Nurse Practitioner. I have had the opportunity to care for wonderful individuals, each of whom have contributed the fabric of my personal nursing career. Nursing is a profession of both joy and sadness combined. My career has provided me the opportunity to care for those I need. In retrospect I can say that my personal nursing tapestry is comprised of patients who were grateful to a care team, after being revived from suffering a sudden cardiac event, the smile of a trusting child, a hand to be held while working with hospice patients and their families. My current role is a case manager. I seldom have direct contact with patients who have chronic illnesses, yet I am gifted with their trust. I have been given an opportunity to support, care, respect, educate, collaborate and research practice improvement initiatives. I continue to formulate my own nursing philosophy daily. While I experience daily encounters that allow my tapestry to become more colorful and detailed, I allow myself to set new goals. My final nursing goal, is to become a nurse practitioner. I can see myself in the next year working in an academic capacity in becoming a leader in rural health improvement and proficient at educating patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions, speaking at national events, advocating for patients and playing an active role in health policy. It takes a while to get to know yourself before you are able to care for another person. Studying oneself is challenging because it allows reflection of one’s inner self, exposing your strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, interests, habits, defenses, and values. On the same note, it allows a person to be more familiar with the challenges he or she faces, how they might respond to certain situations, and offers an opportunity for learning and growth. During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. As a medical / surgical RN, I provided care for the elderly, the infirm, the mentally challenged, the young, and the psychologically disturbed. The wide variety of patients exposed me to the effects of life style choices, health care choices, and the resulting impacts to the patient as well as to the family of the patient. This experience has fully matured my view of the awesome responsibility that we, as health care professionals, have been charged with, and it has furthered my desire to obtain the skills necessary to provide more advanced care for my patients. In addition to exposure, maturity and experience, my career as a medical / surgical RN has also sharpened my critical thinking abilities and provided insight on observing signs and symptoms that a patient may be unware of. The first step in deciding what practice setting and clinical model that I would prefer. I did research and decided that a primary care provider would fit my career goals. A primary care nurse practitioner is defined as a nurse that works in a practice setting that has "the provision of integrated, accessible health care services by clinicians who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health needs, developing sustained partnerships with patients, and practicing in the context of family and community" (Anderson & O’Grady, 2009, p. 383). I believe my past and future education, along with my years of clinical experience, has prepared me to take a novice role as a NP in this care setting. When I graduate and I am working in a clinical practice setting, I look forward to continuing my education through my practice through formal and informal training.
What led me to nursing in the beginning was having a passion for people. I love the holistic approach and level of care that nurses bring to the literal bedside table. I knew throughout nursing school that I wanted to advance my education further than bedside nursing. I debated on whether to pursue a master’s degree in nursing and just become a nurse practitioner, but ultimately, I knew I wanted to advance my education even further to help make and promote changes in healthcare. My transition into the nursing profession was a major achievement for I am able to use my acquired skills to contribute to the community. As a bedside nurse and a staff member of a large medical establishment, I had to learn how to deliver care to a population that is very diverse. In order for that care to be effective, I must assume the roles of a counselor, therapist, educator, advocate and most of all as an interpersonal facilitator.
My journey to nursing began with my personal healthcare experience, and has continued to evolve since entering the nursing program at State University. My personal philosophy of nursing is related my life experience and my personal philosophy of life. Using reflection-on-action, I have begun to understand the influences that have lead me to nursing. I discovered client and family centered care to be an important quality when I look at the influential nurses in my life. To develop a positive therapeutic nurse-client relationship, nurses must integrate all 5 dimensions of the therapeutic nurse-client relationship into their practice (CNO, 2006). When it comes to providing client-centered care, the dimensions of trust, empathy and respect are particularly important (CNO, 2006). Illness can be a traumatic experience for patients and their families, and it is important to be empathetic to the patient’s needs, while still trusting the patient to be an expert in their illness and care.
Pursuing nursing is my passion as it is my ambition to be there to help and serve others which I know will bring value to my own life as well. Whether that is in a position of health promotion and teaching kids about stress relief at a health fair like I was able to this last fall. Or, being there when they are in a health crisis I want to get to know my clients so I can best serve them by truly taking the time to get to know their individual needs.
