My Night at the Orchestra

Never before the night of February 26th, 2014 had I been to a symphony orchestra. It was a first time experience for me and one I will truly not be able to forget easily. The Grand Valley State University Symphony Orchestra as well as the Chamber Orchestra performed that night and it was quite a show. The concert was set to begin at 8 pm and knowing that, I arrived at 7:30 pm to make sure I could fully take in the experiences that occur before the show truly begins. As I walked into the Louis Armstrong Theatre, I saw many, many instruments sitting on the stage as well as more open seats that the orchestra sat at once the show began. As the performers were gathering to their seats and the conductor, Henry Duitman, went in front of them, we all knew the show was about to begin.
Once all the performers were in their seats and the show began, the first piece they performed was called Huldigungsmarsch from “Sigurd Jorsalfar”. The piece was originally composed by Edward Grieg and was performed by the orchestra brilliantly. There were many, many elements involved in the piece that we have learned about in class. The very beginning of the piece was quite soft or piano and a few measures later gradually became forte. This occurred many times throughout the first piece as all the performers and instruments were involved. At the very beginning of the piece it was only the woodwinds playing the notes, then as it began to turn more forte, the brass got involved as well as all the other groups of instruments. AS the piece went on, there were many parts where polyphony were happening regularly. Many times the brass instruments and the strings were playing at the same time, but they were playing different things. The end of the piece sounded lik...

...ruments in the song as well. The song was rich and full of color and was just an upbeat and nice piece to listen to. Near the end of the composition, it gradually got louder and then when the last few notes were played, there was an emphasis on them. They also seemed to end the song on a full cadence to really make the song feel like it was over.
At the end of the night when I left the theatre, I felt glad that I went to the orchestra. Without this class I would have never felt the need to go and probably would not have ever gone. The music was all very well played and you could tell countless hours went into producing the beautiful music I heard that night. My favorite piece was the one composed by Josef Suk because it just seemed so light and happy. Louis Armstrong Theatre was the place to be on the night of February 26th, and it will be a day I shall not forget.
