No matter where life takes us, there are always obstacles everywhere we turn. This is where motivation takes its course and leads us to the right path in reaching our true potential. Although there are many responsibilities to take care of, I am able to push myself simply because of one thing: motivation. As an aspired nurse practitioner, I plan to pursue my education through graduate school and eventually, serve my community as a healthcare professional. My interest in nursing began after I received an emergency appendectomy during my sophomore year in high school. I had the greatest opportunity of shadowing health care professionals such as nurses, dietitians, surgeons, and radiologists. Out of my four rotations from Pali Momi - operating room, nursing, food and nutrition, and imaging department - the nursing rotation, became my biggest interest of what I want to become in my professional career. I loved the constant interaction with patients because I got to know them on a personal level, and also sharpen my interpersonal skills. One person had told that I will not be successful if I were to follow my path of becoming a nurse practitioner on top of obtaining a degree in public health. I was unable to comprehend or understand what he meant by that statement. I firmly believe that being educated in public health is an asset that will only supplement my degree in nursing and many other health care degrees. I will be able to develop, promote, and protect the health of not only individuals but entire populations and communities. After receiving negative statements such as, “both fields are completely different” and “having both will not help you get far in life,” I am more than ever determined to pursue my degree in nursing and public health. I will not only prove them wrong, but also prove to myself that I have what it takes to get to where I want to be. Eventually, I would like to share my knowledge with others, further encourage, and instill the belief that discouragement can be turned into motivation and drive to succeed. Based on these features listed above, I am proven to be as honorable and hardworking as a nurse practitioner. From the beginning of high school to further continuing my education through my years in college, it definitely has brought me a tremendous experience of a lifetime. Nursing is a profession that has always been in sight for me since I was four years-old and I fractured my elbow. I was playing with one of my friends who was also my neighbor. We were playing with a big pink, round, rubber ball. I remember thinking that it would be amusing to try and hug the ball and roll on the ground. Of course since I was only four at the time, I did not think to check my surroundings to make sure that it was a safe environment to be doing such an act. Once I finished my roll I slammed my elbow on a rock that was peeking through the top of the grass. I immediately shrieked out in pain and then had to go to the hospital. Throughout the whole experience I only remember one part of the hospital, the nurse. From the moment that she starting taking care of me in my room, when I was getting casted, to my discharge from the hospital she did nothing but provide high quality care while also making sure that I felt comfortable and relaxed the whole time. At that moment I told my mother that I wanted to be a nurse and that nothing else was going to persuade my decision.
I have had the opportunity to care for wonderful individuals, each of whom have contributed the fabric of my personal nursing career. Nursing is a profession of both joy and sadness combined. My career has provided me the opportunity to care for those I need. In retrospect I can say that my personal nursing tapestry is comprised of patients who were grateful to a care team, after being revived from suffering a sudden cardiac event, the smile of a trusting child, a hand to be held while working with hospice patients and their families. My current role is a case manager. I seldom have direct contact with patients who have chronic illnesses, yet I am gifted with their trust. I have been given an opportunity to support, care, respect, educate, collaborate and research practice improvement initiatives. I continue to formulate my own nursing philosophy daily. While I experience daily encounters that allow my tapestry to become more colorful and detailed, I allow myself to set new goals. My final nursing goal, is to become a nurse practitioner. I can see myself in the next year working in an academic capacity in becoming a leader in rural health improvement and proficient at educating patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions, speaking at national events, advocating for patients and playing an active role in health policy. From five years old up I knew I wanted to be a nurse practitioner. When I was around 13 years old my mom got very sick which had her in and out of the hospital, this only pushed me further in the direction of becoming a nurse practitioner. I would always see nurses in and out of my mom’s room when she was in the hospital, some were nice others were not. I always tell myself, “You’re going to be one of the nice ones, the one that makes the whole ordeal just a little bit better.”
Ever since I was younger, I wanted to get into the medical field. Both my grandmothers used to work in the hospital and I would always wanted to tag along. Following them to work influenced my decision to work in a hospital. Every time I tag along, I would see many interesting things that would catch my attention and make me curious. There was a lot of materials such as the stethoscope, weighing machine, and etcetera that I would pretend to be a doctor or nurse examining imaginary people. It was absolutely perfect because I always wanted to help people. So this fall of 2014, I will be starting my education on becoming a nurse anesthetist.
Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.
During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. I was visiting my brother in Massachusetts when I got sick on the airplane. I went to the emergency room and I was immediately admitted into the hospital. The doctor recognized my symptoms and immediately took action to medically treat my condition. I enjoyed my week stay in the hospital because the nurses and I became so close and the nurses were there for me when I needed them. The nurses kept me inform, comfort me by making me feel everything was going to be alright. The nurses that took care of me genuinely cared and guided me each step to recovery. My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Another reason for selecting a career in nursing has a lot to do with my current job position at Generations Elder Care. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field.
