Groups are vital to society simply because being alone with nobody to share experiences with and help through the hard times, can drive a person insane. A great example of this is shown in the movie Cast Away where Tom Hanks' character, Chuck Noland, has been stranded for a long length of time with no human interaction and in crazed desperation, creates a friendship with a Wilson volleyball. Groups have always been a beacon of safety in multiple ways. In ancient times being part of a group would provide more protection from the wildlife surrounding them and today being in a group can save people from sexual predators and even murderers. Group cohesion is not caused by one single factor but by the contribution of many other factors (Tuckman, 1964) In order for a group to be fully cohesive a certain process occurs, a conceptual model created by Carron et al (1985) clearly outlines this procedure, this model says that there can be two routes towards group cohesion, one of which is group integration, this is how the group itself bonds together and is dependant on if the individuals within the group form a bond. This article explains how to find a group by giving tips on what you should look for when looking for a support group and suggests you do not nix a group you do not like until you give it 3 months.
According to Coleman & James (1961) ‘cohesion tends to be weaker and moral tends to be lower in a larger group than in a smaller one.’ The reason they state this happens is because, in the majority of cases there is a lack of intimacy within the group and in extremely large groups the members are almost strangers to one another.
In the movie Castaway the main character, Chuck, is in love with this girl named Kelly. Sadly he’s never around because he’s always working. He is an operations executive for FedEx and he flies all over the world. His plane departed on Christmas night and didn’t return for five years. His plane experiences technical difficulties and goes down in the south pacific. He lay on a raft for the whole night as the terrible storm blew him 500 miles south, to a deserted island. On the island he tried to keep his physical health alive along with his mental health. After eliminating Maslow's Hierarchy of needs I was able to identify exactly what he was missing in his life. I knew witch needs were being abandoned and where he had to make compromises to make up for the gaps.
Non-group members are less likely to have had the same experiences as in-group members, therefore non-group members are less likely to share same viewpoint on an issue; furthermore, they are less likely to recognize the group’s issues as an issue at all.
In order to evaluate my role within the group it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. Certain tasks can only be performed by combined effort of a group. Organisations can use groups to carry out projects, which will help to achieve its overall aim. Forming a counseling group may seem simple, but it’s not. A “major issue in putting a group together is screening it for potential members” (Gladding, pg. 212). The reason it can be a complicated task to complete is because members are not always volunteers. Screening members for a “group counseling session, is a three step process” (Gladding, pg. 212). We’ll discuss how these steps are an important component of having a successful group.
In the movie Cast Away, Chuck Noland says that to turn ones back on time is to commit a sin. In this movie, Chuck’s life revolves around time, and his ability to make more money is directly affected by time. This fact, however, is exactly what is related as a bad thing. Throughout the movie, capitalistic ventures, which require an extreme investment of time, are characterized as evil. The message sent in Cast Away is that we live in a corrupt and morally bankrupt society which is only concerned with the bottom line, but if we all “get back to the basics” and search our souls for what really matters in life, we may have a chance of turning out okay.

Even though we are all categorized in to groups from the day were conceived. We can still create our own group, and whether are not you create your own group or if it was chosen for you there will be effective and ineffective aspects of that group. Base the circumstances that each individual’s values and beliefs are different. Further more, participation and similarity of other group members and the goals of the group will also affect the group dynamic.
Groups are the essence of life in a society for the reason that everyone is born into one, such as to a mother and father. Your family, church congregation, faculty at a university, and sports teams whether professional or not are all examples of groups. In a general sense, " Groups are people who have something in common and who believe that what they have in common is significant." Societies are the largest and most difficult groups that are studied by social scientists. They are people who share a culture and a territory; they also contain smaller groups within itself. " The types of groups within a society are primary groups, secondary groups, reference groups, social networks, in-groups and out-groups."
Lastly, the reflection back is very important to the corrective emotional experience. What I found useful about group cohesiveness is knowing that you are never alone at first; the members feel alone, but they are others who have gone through the same things they have. Group cohesiveness gives members a sense that they belong and are welcomed. The group members are initially very supportive and accepting of new and old members.
