The book I am reading is Mr. Tucket by Gary Paulsen, when fourteen year old Francis Alphonse Tucket in 1847 and is heading West on the Wagon Train when a surprise birthday party happens and he gets a .40 caliber weapon. But suddenly everything goes bad for his folks, Francis is captured by Pawnees. The Indian leader a gimmick comes and catches Francis fighting an Indian boy.The old woman is wife of the old warrior in the hunting party. When Francis wakes, she puts a rope on him and shows him off at each lodge, boys kick him. He fights the boys, decides it isn't worth it, and smiles at the old woman. She removes the rope. He is attacked by three boys. The fighting stops.

In the book Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt she wrote about a nine year old boy named Jethro Creighton and his family. A war started to arrive in mid-April 1861, because of the north and south wanted to either keep slaves or to free them but that decision caused chaos to start to emerge. This chaos jumped into Jethro’s life when some of his brothers joined the war almost all of them joined the north but one joined the south, which in their case was the enemy. This left Jethro with the job of plowing the field. He got help from his fourteen year old Sister Jenny. Jethro’s mother Ellen and his father Matt were left worrying about their sons John, Tom, Bill, and their cousin Eb, and Jenny’s boyfriend Shadrach Yale. All this chaos with the war left the Creighton’s family worried sick, through all this they had to deal with the consequences of betrayal, and death on their minds.
The story by Somerville Ross, “Philippa’s Fox Hunt” was set in Ireland. A recently married couple Mr. and Mrs. Yeates were featured adapting to a new environment. The new place was characterized by new social activities that were not common in their previous residence. They had to learn new skills such as riding horses and hunting. Mr. Yeates who narrated the story described his life after marriage and how events had shaped his marriage. At the very beginning I was able to pick an element of symbolism; a newly married couple will naturally start a new life and similarly in the story the couple ventured into a new society where almost everything was new just in the same way when two people get married to each other.
In my personal favorite scene of the book, the boy and his father are working on a farm in the midst of the summer but the farmer they are doing work for does not allow anyone to take breaks, even the children. Several of the workers have taken to going to a water trough on the edge of a field to drink under the pretense of needing to relieve themselves. Soon, the farmer catches on and comes up with a tactic to scare them away and keep the workers from doing it again by shooting his rifle in their direction. Accidentally though, he shoots a young boy and the body falls in the trough. Although he was not found guilty of murder, he is ridden with guilt his entire life thereafter.
The main character in this story is Huck Finn, Finn is a young boy with many problems going on in life. Huck was in need of a father figure more then any thing else in life. He needed someone to talk to about anything. Huck's Pap was never there for him except maybe to give him a tanning. Huck's Pap thought that he was trying to out do him, because he went to school. "You've put on considerable many frills since I been away. I'll take you down a peg before I get done with you. You think you're better'n your father, now don't you, because he can't? I'll take it out of you. Who told you you might meddle with such hifalut'n foolishness, hey?-who told you you could" Pap scolded (p,26). Huck didn't like having to wear nice clothes, or even going to school, but the he had to go. "Starchy clothes-very. You think you're a good deal of a big-bug, don't you" Pap asked (p,26)?
This Novel Series is by James Fenimore Cooper and it is called The Leatherstocking Tales. This story is about Hawkeye, an adopted son of the Native Americans. He aids and protects the Munrd sisters as they travel to Fort William Henry. This all took place on the USA. Frontier in the 1750’s. Natty Bumpo’s possession of moral resolve, generosity and resourcefulness that set the standard of twentieth century heroes.
The book Ten Little Indians was written by Sherman Alexie. Each chapter of the book is about a different Spokane Indian and their lives as an Indian. From the first chapter one can tell that the author has a serious issue when it comes to talking about anything sexual. Every chapter in the book mentions something that is severely sexual in nature or is a play by play of someone’s sex life. In the end, each chapter was extremely unique and most was hard to stop reading.
The book “This Boy’s Life” by Tobias Wolff is a memoir written about the author’s childhood memories and experiences. The author shows many different characters within the book. Many of them are just minor character that does not affect the author much in his life choices and thoughts throughout his growth. But there are some that acts as the protagonist and some the antagonist. One of them is Dwight, the protagonist’s or Jack’s stepfather. This character seems to be one of the characters that inhibit Jack’s choices and decisions. This character plays a huge role in Jack’s life as it leaves a huge scar in his memory. The author here spends the majority of time in this character in the memoir to show the readers the relationship between Jack and Dwight.
I read the book Braving the Fire. It takes place in the year 1863. The book is about a 15 year old boy from Maryland named Jem Bridwell. He lives on a farm with his father, grandfather, and their slaves. Because Maryland was a “border state” during the civil war, it was not considered part of the Confederacy, although most of the people living in Maryland at the time were for the Confederates. Jem’s father, Tom Bridwell, on the other hand had joined the Union Army because he believed in freeing the slaves and keeping the Union. James Bridwell, Jem’s grandfather, was completely against Tom’s being in the Union Army and the Union itself.
This story took place on the frontier, in the summer of 1768, in Maine's woods. Matt Hallowell and his father stake a claim in Maine territory. Once they find the perfect place, they build a new cabin. There were many trees around and a river close by where they could get water and food. There was even enough room to plant corn. There weren't any other settlers there. After Matt and his father got the place ready, they both decided that Matt would stay to guard the new cabin while his dad went back to Massachusetts to get the rest of the family including Matt's mother who was going to have a baby and his sister. Matt is only twelve years old and he has to stay by himself in the wilderness. He is scared but knows he can do it.

The days when the West was once the newest frontier have been preserved forever due to the many novels and movies written about them. The stories from the west are full of action, packed with battles between cowboys and Indians, and adventures of tracking down pistoleros (bandits, gunman). They are also full of drama, cowboys who have fallen in love with prostitutes, finding long-lost loved ones, and the pains of growing up in hopes of being a cowboy. All of this action can be found in one Western novel, Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry. One theme, however, stands out from the rest of them. The theme of growing up and maturing is a predominant theme in the book Lonesome Dove. Newt, the young stable hand, is finally maturing and is looking to his leaders, Augustus 'Gus' McCrae, Captain Woodrow F. Call, and other assorted cow hands such as Dish Bogget, Joshua Deets, and Jake Spoon for advice and tips in life. After being born to a prostitute mother, who died, Newt was raised by the Hat Creek Outfit. This outfit is like the Bad News Bears. It is a ragtag group serving no real purpose other than to steal horses from Mexican bandits and then sell them to travelers who happen to stop by the desolate town of Lonesome Dove. This is a very harsh environment for Newt to grow up in. Newt is constantly looking for a companion and friend, and at the very least someone to talk to. He talks to Deets, the only one in the company who seems to enjoy his company. Call is too shy, abrupt, and ashamed to get into long discussions with Newt. Gus certainly do...

The historical fiction book, Elijah of Buxton, was written by Christopher Paul Curtis. The main character of the story is an eleven-year-old boy named Elijah. He was the first child to be born free in Buxton, Canada, a settlement of runaway slaves, he lives there with his Ma and Pa. People in the settlement, mostly his Ma, consider Elijah to be a fragile boy since he gets scared easily especially by snakes. A second character in this book is Preacher, he is a very dishonest person and has lied to Elijah on many occasions, he is a white man so he doesn’t live on the settlement. Another character is Cooter, who is Elijah’s best friend, he is usually in trouble, but he is always there for Elijah when he needs him. Mr. Leroy is a hard working man that lives in the settlement. He helps Mrs. Holton, who also lives in Buxton, with clearing her property and she pays him for his work so he can eventually buy his wife and children out of slavery.
