Beaty states that there are many serial killers and victims of them, but she is unsure about what causes a person to become a serial killer. Furthermore, she asked many questions, but there was no definite answer. For example, using examples of serial killers including Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy, but only to draw up more questions. However, she wrote many expert opinions too, using them to her advantage in proving her argument, and giving a statement from a respected author and expert on serial killers named Ann Rule (pg315). Rule states that 3,500 to 5,000 people become victims of serial killers. She also states that 350 serial killers are at large in our society (pg315). Additionally, Beaty also presents an early theory that was completely incorrect. This was about how to identify a serial killer by looks. The deadliest school shooting to have ever happened in the United States at a high school or grade school, happened less than two years ago. On December 14th, 2012, Adam Lanza, who was twenty years old at the time, shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, four times and then brought firearms to his former grade school Sandy Hook Elementary, and fatally shot twenty children and six adults. Then the shooter put his own gun to his head and fatally shot himself. All of the children were between the ages of six and seven years old, and all six adults who were shot and killed were females who worked at the school. Lanza's father believed that if he were there himself, his son would have had no trouble shooting and killing him too. He also theorized that Adam shot his mother four times for each of them; himself, his mother, his father, and his brother. After the tragedy, the school was torn down and many gun-control debates heated up and schools greatly improved their security to prevent anymore potential attacks. To this day, the motive of Adam Lanza, is still unknown but the effects are still felt in the world today.

The presumption of innocence is “One of the most sacred principles in the American criminal justice system... the prosecution must prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, each essential element of the crime charged,” (“Presumption Of Innocence”). A guilty man can not be charged without evidence of their wrong doing. In 1999, Adnan Syed was arrested for the murder of Hae Min Lee. From the unfair ruling in the court by the bias jurors, and his lawyer getting lost in her argument and missing the sole purpose of the case, even an innocent man would not have walked free. The facts point to him being guilty but, none of the details should have been admissible in the court. Although Adnan Syed did not act alone, he was and still is, a guilty man who was given an unfair trial.

While awaiting for their arrival he secured the crime scene with caution tape, creating an initial perimeter setup as discussed in lecture two.
