Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 1 Leadership is the action where an individual influences and inspires a group of individuals to do or achieve something together. Throughout history there have been many leaders, good and bad. Martin Luther king Jr. was a substantial leader in American History; he influenced individuals and inspired them to stand up for what they believe in. He was a pivotal advocate for the civil rights movement. He dedicated his life to trying to make it so everyone was treated equally no matter what race, religion, or ethnicity they were. While in jail Martin wrote “the letter from Birmingham jail” on April 16, 1963. In the letter he talked about how he had received multiple letters from people telling him that he shouldn’t be doing this. He explained how it is his right and his moral duty to protest and fight for equal rights. He describes why he believes in nonviolent resistance. He said that people have a moral responsibility to break unjust laws and take action instead of waiting around to potentially get justice. He didn’t just have an affect on the population of blacks, he affected everyone, no matter their skin color. Martin believed that everyone should be equal no matter their race, religion, or ethnicity. He dedicated his life to giving people “a dream” and hope that they could one day achieve that dream. It’s interesting to look at how far our society has come since then, yet it really hasn’t. Segregation and racism is still an ongoing problem today. Though we’ve had many people like Martin that have done everything in their power to try and create an equal atmosphere for people, not everyone sees each other as equals. Though it’s still a problem today without everything Martin did we wouldn’t be near as far as we have come
