Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are called the synoptic gospels. They all tell the same story of Jesus’ life, but from a different viewpoint. While all four books emphasize Jesus’ life, they were all written to compliment each other, not contradict. Matthew was written to the Jews, Mark and Luke were both written to the Gentiles, and it is unknown who Paul wrote the book of John to. Although there are many differences in these books, it all tells one story that we can put together as one . Mark 14:1-11 tells the story of Jesus being anointed at Bethany. Mark 14:3 states: “And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.” Matthew 26:6 is almost identical when it states: “Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his …show more content…

John 12:1-3 says: “Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” John tells a lot more details about this story. First, Mary was the woman and Martha was serving, also it mentioned Lazarus was there. Second, it mentioned how much ointment was in the bottle and lastly, it tells how the house smelled like perfume. As you can see the story told in John was a lot like the same story told in Luke, just with more details, but still is very different from Matthew and
