Margi had been out shopping for jeans with her friend Shadi. Then all the sudden there was a big boom and Margi`s heart sunk when she found out that a missile had landed right in her neighborhood. ‘I didn't want to look up. I looked at my trembling legs. I couldn't go forward, like in a nightmare. Let them be alive. Let them be alive Let them…” (Satrapi 140). She quickly took a taxi to her house and found out that her family was alright and that everything was going to be ok. This made Marji reflect on how she acted to her mother and father and really question what she would do without them. If her parents had died then the last thing she would have said to her mother was for her to give Margi one thousand Tumans which was a ton of money because their currency value had dropped drastically. Firstly, I would be discussing the role of Marjane Satrapi the female character in the Persepolis. Marjane grows up in Iran during the Iranian revolution period. From childhood Marjane grew up with all the freedom compared to the other children who grew up in her home town. Each one of these change her in a way that impacts her view on the world around her as her and her family strive for a better life amongst a war that hinders their ability to follow their beliefs. Marjane learns to forgive, experiences pain and suffering, and changes her opinions on God and her own views on religion forever. Marjane’s life has been filled with hard times, but also glorious moments as well.
Western culture has often misperceived the east and the way that their society functions. In Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, Satrapi uses graphic novels as a way to demonstrate to the western culture how the east has been misrepresented. The use of media helps to depict to the west how their views of the east may have been unfairly formed in the past. The media has only revealed limited knowledge that only shows partial perspectives because it is difficult to get perspectives of the minorities although they are the ones who hold the most truth. In other words the use of graphic novels and a child’s perspective give the west a new idea on how it is that society in the east functions. This style of writing brings the connection between the two vastly different ideologies closer together through the use of a relatable perspective. Having multiple perspectives of a foreign outlook helps the west to better understand the beliefs of the east and expose the misrepresentation that has been given by the media. It also is important to the way that the west understands that the media has wrongly perceived the ideas of the east and how they can change it.

Growing up during a pivotal time in a country is no easy feat. To come out of it as strong willed and intelligent as Marji did is impressive. She did not lead a simple childhood. Throughout the graphic novel “Perseoplis”, by Marjane Satrapi, the main character Marji experiences abandonment in various ways in which she transforms into a mature young adult. Among the most prominent types of abandonment depicted are maternal, familial, romantic and even religious abandonment.
Persepolis is a memoir about a girl named Marjane, who grew up during the Islamic Revolution. Marjane remembers growing up when there was a Shah, the king, the outcome of the Islamic Revolution and the war with Iraq. Marjane was growing up when huge political and social changes were happening the Iranians. Marjane starts the book with the people trying to overthrow the Shah. She illustrates the movements that were going on, even her own parents were in on the action. After the Shah is taken down, the book moves toward the Islamic Revolution and the war with Iraq. Both of these events were huge changes for Marjane; both physically and mentally. The only downfall with the book is that it’s a memoir about her life, so in this case we barely know anything happened outside of her family, which is why memoirs are not good references.
During our class discussions, the issue of identity in Marjane Satrapi’s novel, Persepolis (2004), became a contentious issue. The question was asked whether Persepolis might be understood to being in-dialogue with western ways of seeing and did the effects of modernization influence the identity of Marjane’s protagonist in Persepolis. How does the novel involve the issue of identity? I will extend the argument and, through the exploration of Marji’s changing ideologies, I will attempt to prove that Marji is caught between the traditional eastern culture and western modernization.

Growing up in Iran is hard enough as it is, take a smart, brave, independent young girl, put her in Iran and one gets Marjane Satrapi. The autobiography Persepolis written by Marjane Satrapi tells the story of her kid to early teen years growing up in Iran. The story mainly focuses on the political aspect of Iran of the 1980s along with some more personals tales about her relationship with her family. Marji’s personality alters a great deal during the story of persepolis. It is safe to say that Marji is a brave, smart, independent young girl with a very interesting story.

Throughout the novel, Marjane never completely conforms or lets go of her roots, this is primarily due to the women who have influenced her. Marjane’s mother was one of the most influential people in her life, her mother taught her to be strong and independent. By introducing her mother through the story of her mother getting photographed at a demonstration, Marjane presents her mother as being independent and rebellious (Satrapi 5).
Throughout Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi shows the honoring of martyrs; someone who dies at the hands of another for their religion. In ancient religious wars such as the Crusades, dying a martyr was the best thing a boy could do. In reality, they die as pawns of the government. In the “Key to Paradise” passage of Satrapi’s Persepolis, the author symbolizes heaven with a key to show how the government victimizes those of lower economic status.

Satrapi wrote and illustrated this book to show Americans that their perspective of her home country, Iran, is askew. She believes Americans are too focused on the “fundamentalism, fanaticism, and terrorism” (Satrapi ii), of the nation and that they forget to notice the normality and humanness of it. Since the literary devices in a work are needed to correctly convey a message, she found it necessary to include these and manipulate them in her favor. Satrapi uses the innocence of a child along with morals in her pictures and a relation of cultures to effectively communicate her message. It is necessary to examine how she manipulates such literary devices in order to gain a full understanding of the text.
