Marcus Rothkowitz was born in Dyinsk, Russia(Daugavpils, Latvia.) Born on September 25, in 1903. His family immigrated to Portland, Oregon when he was a young boy. Ten years old to be exact. Later on, in his life he changed his name to, Mark Rohko which is what he becomes known by. Mark Rothko is very known to be one the most “popular central figures of Abstract Expressionist movement in American art in the 1950s, and the 1960s.” Which is stated in the first paragraph from Bio on the page written on him. In the middle of the 20th century, he tagged along with the group of the New York artist. In that group include other people such as, Williem De kooning and Jackson Pollock. Later, their group became known as the Abstract Expressionist. Most of his work had large scales paintings full of colored rectangles. Within his paintings, he used means to bring out emotional responses. Mark was very bright, and full of intelligence, graduating from Portland’s Lincoln High School in 1921. His style of art began to change over the years, really showing that in the 1940s. Before he painted a view of a normal urban life that sensed isolation, and confused feelings. After world war two, he “ turned to timeless themes of death, and survival,” that is from Bio, and is found in the sixth paragraph. His paintings had the look of ancient myths, and religious looks. He stopped painting scenes from a human life, and went to painting that looked like plants ,and odd creatures. Being influenced by ideas of Surrealists for example Max Ernst and Joan Miro. Adolph Gottlieb, which is an artist too, and Mark wrote about their artistic beliefs. They said that “Art is an adventure into an unknown world”, and “ We favor the simple expression of the complex thought” which is found in what they
