Maine Lobster: Soft-shell versus Hard shell
A lobster must shed its shell in order to grow. It takes about five to seven years for a lobster to become a legal size harvestable adult. Soft-shell is the term used for a newly molted lobster. A soft-shell lobster has a shell with room for growth. Soft-shell lobsters are not as full of meat because their new shell is larger than the muscle inside the body. The part not filled with its body’s muscle tissue is filled with water. Soft-shell lobsters may look big on the outside, but they have a much lower meat yield on the inside. Most adult lobsters molt from June to September depending upon location and water temperatures.
Hard-shell lobster is a lobster with an old shell whose body has completely filled its shell. A hard-shell lobster is a fully meated lobster which is mainly caught during the winter and spring months of the fishing season. During these months, lobsters are at their peak health and condition, and the meat yields are at their highest.
Why do consumers prefer soft-shell lobsters to hard-shell lobsters? Many consumers prefer soft-shell lobsters over hard-shell lobsters because of several reasons. According to some people, meat from soft-shell lobsters is more tender than from hard-shell ones. They contend that the meat is sweeter and juicier than the hard-shell lobsters. In addition, some people prefer soft-shell lobsters because they do not need any tools to crack them apart. Moreover, some people prefer soft-shell lobsters because they are less expensive than hard-shell ones. If you are looking for cheap and abundant soft-shell lobsters, then the summer months are good because the weather does not keep lobstermen from fishing them.
Why do consumers prefer hard-shell lobsters to soft-shell lobsters? Many consumers prefer hard-shell lobsters over soft-shell lobsters because of several reasons. Hard-shell lobster contains fifty percent more meat than the same size soft-shell lobster. Hard-shell meat is firmer, while soft-shell meat is softer and tends to have more water. Furthermore, hard-shell lobsters ship better than soft-shell lobsters because they are less likely to crack en route. If you are looking for hard-shell lobsters, the winter months are ideal for this, but prices are higher because it is more trying for lobstermen to be out in the elements.
Jan de Heem painting, “Still Life with Lobster” is an oil painting with a bright red lobster that catches the viewer gaze into this beautiful dinner from the late 1640s.The color scheme used in this painting is analogous since it uses relatively close hues. In the painting, the lobster is on a silver platter but it has been left untouched. Surrounding the focal point of the painting is luxurious fruits including grapes, cherries, peaches, berries, oranges, and a half peeled lemon. To the left of the lobster is an overturned silver goblet. This particular style of painting is known as a vanitas form of painting. The artist is using a luxurious left over meal to show even the most expensive desires of the world doesn’t last for eternity. The
Wallace uses Pathos as an persuasive device in his article as he describes the catching and cooking process of the lobster. Using his words, he gives the audience the idea that the lobster is not just an item for consumption, but also a live creature. “They come up alive in the traps, are placed in containers of seawater, and can, so long as the water’s aerated and the animals’ claws are pegged or banded to keep them from tearing one another up under the stresses of captivity, survive right up until they’re boiled (Wallace, 60). He mentions that the lobster is in fact boiled alive to maintain it’s freshness and describes the boiling process. “[The lobster] comes alarmingly to life when placed in boiling water. The lobster will sometimes try to cling to the container’s sides or even hook its claws over the kettle’s rim like a person trying to keep from going over the edge of a roof” (Wallace 62). He compares the lobster during the cooking process to a human in terror of falling to their death. This gives the audience something to relate to on an emotional level based on the simile he presents to us. Based on this evidence and the words the author chooses to present to the reader, it is suggested that
Brine shrimp are tiny crustaceans that populate numerous bodies of salty water all around the globe. Brine shrimp are adapted endure varying levels of salinity but their ideal salt environment is more than twice as salty as the ocean. The life of a brine shrimp begins when it is born a free swimming larvae, known as nauplii, or hatches from an egg. A brine shrimp will reach adulthood somewhere between one and six weeks, depending on the factors of its environment. Conditions such as a warm water temperature and high oxygen levels are optimal for development. Several times throughout its maturation, a brine shrimp will shed its exoskeleton and grow a new, larger one. The average adult is just around eight millimeters in length but sizes of brine
The controversy behind the stem cell research has been raging since the first experiments. The United States Congress banned federally supported human-embryo research in 1996, forcing scientists to solicit funding from private sponsors. Since stem cells are harvested from aborted fetuses, the ethical issues surrounding abortion act as a stigma in the public’s view. However, in September of last year, the National Bioethics Advisory Commission concluded that harvesting stem cells from discarded embryos is morally akin to removing organs from dead people for transplant. Stem cell research continues to be very controversial, yet prevalent in the scientific community.
When Spring rain starts, land crabs know that the signal for mating season. Land crabs mate in underground burrows. Millions of female crabs hurry toward the ocean to drop off their fertilized eggs in the water and return to the swamp. Mullet and other fish eat the little crabs that hatch from the eggs. The baby crabs that survive the first few weeks of their lives, will join the adults in nearby forests. Unfortunately, crossing a road is part of the journey to the ocean. Therefore, many drivers find that their tires have been punctured and many crabs have been run over. The crabmeat is toxic to people, but animals seem to love it. Especially the endangered Cuban crocodile. Cuba's land crab population doesn't seem to be in danger. Officials
The ‘Purple Shore Crab’ (Hemigrapsus nudus) is a tiny crustacean that inhabits the mid to low zone of the Rocky shore. This location is an intertidal zone, meaning that the organism lives in a very harsh environment. These crabs, as the name suggests, are purple in colour, with reddish-purple spots on their claws. They are known as decapods, because they have 10 legs (the first pair is modified into claws), and unlike many other crab species they do not have hairs on these legs. Crabs are invertebrates meaning that they have a hard exoskeleton (shell), they are also cold blooded meaning that they take on the temperature from their surroundings, as opposed to trying to maintain a general temperature (warm blooded). Purple Shore Crabs are omnivores, they scavenge for dead organic matter, plants
This study, which was published in 2012 by the California State Science Fair, focused more on the growth factors of the brine shrimp in different pH environments. Although the findings of this particular study resulted in showing the ability of brine shrimp to thrive in higher pH habitats, this research project showed a larger population resulting in the basic and acidic tanks rather than the neutral. Many factors could have affected the results, producing the contradictions between the two projects. The pH levels of the 2012 study were only varied after the samples were already hatched. The current project focused on the ability of the eggs to hatch in the various pH solutions. There is a possibility that developed brine shrimp may have better chances surviving in acidic and alkaline environments, but these conditions may be too difficult for the delicate process of hatching. Human error could also play a role in the contradicting
The treatment of lobsters and whether or not it is right to prepare them as food is a highly debated matter that is continuously being brought up in our society. Lobsters are one of the most majestic and interesting creatures that our waters have to offer. These poor animals are becoming the victims of widespread cruelty due to over-harvesting and by the very inhumane methods of preparation that are used to cook these lobsters. The effects of these bad behaviors create much debate in the world, which extend to countless individuals. The overall cruelty that is demonstrated towards lobsters is damaging to both the lobster population and society’s reputation and these acts of brutality must be stopped.
2. A second challenge is efficient routing in the presence of frequently disconnected, pre-scheduled, or opportunistic link availability.
Stem cell research is one of the most controversial topics, people oppose it because they think that the destruction of an embryo is the same as abortion. They believe that the embryo constitutes life because it has the potential to fully develop into a human being. I personally think that life begins when the baby takes its first breath out of the womb. Once a baby is aborted, it is going to be deposed of. So, if it is going to be wasted, then why not use the stem cells from the embryos to help people? Also, it is important to do research on embryonic stem cells because it increases our knowledge on how cancer and birth defects form. Plus, these cells are undifferentiated, allowing them to be used in all parts of the body, giving them the
When it comes to getting network traffic from point A to point B, no single way suits every application. Voice and video applications require minimum delay variation, while mission-critical applications require hard guarantees-of-service and rerouting.
During the first period of the lifecycle female will lay a clutch of up to 50,000 orange eggs, which take approximately 30 days to develop (The Pacific Mole Crab, n.d.). Once the egg hatches the sand crab will develop into Larvae undergo five zoel stages into adulthood. Roughly four to five month post-larvae-to-plankotonic development, full-grown adult sand crabs external anatomy will consists of antennas, thoracic limbs (pereopods), mouth parts, and a bivalve invertebrate shell (Pacific Mole Crab, n.d.). In addition to fully developed and functioning respiratory systems, circulatory system, digestive system, and female reproductive
Stem cells are cells that have the ability to help thousands of people. These cells can help make dreams of finally getting rid of the wheelchair or bed become realities. They have the power to differentiate into any cell type, giving scientists hope that one day they can fix and repair organs damaged by disease or birth defects and help fight against diseases that impair a person’s quality of life. However, it is not the uses or benefits that can come out of using stem cells, but it is how scientists and researchers obtain the stem cells that have sparked debate over if it is ethical, moral, or legal to first acquire, and then use, the cells for human use and research. Stem cells can be obtained through a mother having an abortion, excess embryos through in vitro fertilization, or by saving the umbilical cord by freezing it and using it for future needs. The other controversial part of using embryos for stem cells is the idea that an embryo has the potential of becoming a human being and therefore should have a moral status the same as a person. These are the areas that mainly spark the debate over stem cells.
Since that time, however, the scale of the Internet has grown exponentially. It became increasingly difficult for a government-sponsored network to scale to such sizes, so the government gradually turned the network over to the private sector. Since the government is no longer responsible for access to the Internet, private companies – Internet Service Providers (ISPs) – have emerged to provide access to this vast network. These ISPs, of course, are private companies whose principal goal is to make a profit – a radical contrast to the goal of the original ISP, the US government. The rise of ISPs as dominant players in today’s Internet has been a catalyst for a more centralized network that is shifting away from the original end to end design; this change has been a negative one for it has hurt the most important group associated with the Internet – the end users.
