Macbeth presents many themes for analysis such as guilt and conscience. This theme was played out quite a few times throughout macbeth’s main characters, macbeth and lady macbeth. I think this theme had the most impact on the story line. It also affects the topics of Dramatic irony: The expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect, and also character development of the two main characters. Guilt is an emotional experience that happens when a person thinks that they have disrupted their morals. Although Lady Macbeth’s character starts off strong in the play, her guilt and conscience gets to her and she is forced to suffer the consequences. As we read the play we see her as the one without guilt because she is always telling macbeth what to do and she tells him that “The past cannot be undone and not to dwell on it because the guilt will drive him crazy.” When her personality was completely changed by the end of the play, what she had said to Macbeth becomes ironic because she’s the one who ends up with the guilt and letting it drive her crazy and she ends up dead. Another character that Shakespeare creatively uses to create the theme of guilt and conscience throughout the play is Macbeth. At the beginning of the play Macbeth is shown as a character who is loyal and strong, as we get more and more into the play we can begin to see his character changing for the worse. He is manipulated into committing multiple murders so he can get and maintain his spot as the king of Scotland.
