Have you ever been lonely? In the book Of Mice and Men there are many characters that experience loneliness. Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Candy are the three main characters who experience loneliness in the book Of Mice and Men. Curley’s wife is the only female on the farm and her husband Curley tries to run her life. Crooks is the only African American on the farm and has to live in a separate area than the other workers. Candy is the oldest worker on the farm and has a pet dog for a best friend. Curley’s wife is the only Female on the farm which sets her apart from the others. On the farm other workers tend to call Crooks the “Stable Buck.” They call him this because he has to live in the stables away from the other men. He has to live in a separate area because he is an African American man. Crooks does not really want people around his personal belongings in the stables. Crooks says people need to keep away from him and he will keep away from them. Candy is the oldest farm worker Curley has around, which makes him a little different than the other workers. Candy says he really wants some land to himself because, he is tired of planting crops for everyone around and getting slim pay. The main reason Candy is lonely however is because his dog got shot. A fellow farm member Carlson is the one who shot Candy’s dog. Carlson shot Candys dog because it was old and smelt really bad. Candy’s dog was his best friend and the only one he enjoyed talking to. In conclusion, Candy, Curley’s wife, and Crooks are all people that experience loneliness in the book Of Mice and Men. Curley’s wife was lonely because she couldn’t leave the house, Crooks was lonely because he had to live in a separate area, and Candy was lonely because Carlson shot his dog. I feel sorry for these characters because, none of them deserve to feel lonely or left out, but were made that way by the other
