Why are characters lonely in Of Mice and Men?

Can loneliness ever bring death into people’s lives? The answer to that question is yes, it can and it does. Infact, loneliness is what often causes people to commit suicide. In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, many characters are often lonely. But that loneliness is caused by something, something that is common to everyone in their lifetime, maybe even you! According to me, the definition of loneliness is a feeling that naturally occurs when there is no communication between you and someone else, or if you do not like to talk to anyone. This sometimes causes people to create rage (mentally, and physically). This can also sometimes cause death, of yourself or someone else. So in this book, what John Steinbeck is trying to say about loneliness is that, the people are lonely because of their physical features and this involves Candy, Curley’s Wife and Crooks. They all are lonely in their own ways, but have the same problem. Loneliness can be seen in many characters from this book. One of the characters that is lonely in this book is Candy. Candy is fun, nice, happy with how he is, he also loves his dog, a lot, infact his dog is the only one who he has been with most of his life. But none of this is what causes him to be lonely. The reason he is lonely is because of his physical appearance, he is old and this is the main thing causes him to be lonely. “You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn’t good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here i wisht somebody’d shoot me - Candy”. This quote shows how Candy was so lonely that he would rather want someone to kill himself instead of his dog because without his dog, he is now even more lonely. He is more lonelier than when he was before because be... ... middle of paper ... ... Wife”. This shows an example of how she gets lonely because she does not get to come out her house and talk to anyone. This is a physical feature she is born with, and she will have to live with that, but at least women had more rights than black men at that time. In conclusion, all of these characters from “Of Mice and Men” are lonely in their own ways. Candy is old and he lost his only friend, his dog. Crooks is segregated from the society because he is black and not allowed to be with the whites. Also last but not least, Curley’s wife is lonely because she is a woman and she is born with that. In our society, right now, women have a lot of rights, from getting jobs to voting. Blacks are no longer segregated from Whites, and our President, Barack Obama is black himself. Also, old people are respected a lot because we now understand, what they have been through.
