The three analytic paragraphs on the song Zombie, the essay entitled The Closing of the (North) American Mind, and the documentary film Born Into Brothels showcase the literary theories on Marxism, Post-colonial criticism, and feminism. The paragraphs show how people struggle in their own societies in different aspects, politically and socially. Because all three pieces show struggle in all texts, the unifying theme is how people react and overcome the struggles that they face.

ANALYTIC PARAGRAPH # 1: ZOMBIE BY THE CRANBERRIES
The song Zombie by Irish band The Cranberries expresses the theory of post-colonial criticism as it explicitly shows the struggle between the resistance movement and the colonizing power. The title of the song, which is Zombie, refers to the resistance fighters called the Irish Republican Army, or the IRA. Both zombies and the Irish Republican Army share the same characteristics: they both are cold-hearted, mindless drones who will do inhumane acts to express their sentiments in which it is a way of attaining their goals. The truth that the text conveys is that violence is inflicted upon everyone, regardless of gender, race, and wealth. The song Zombie was inspired by the conflict between the Irish nationalists led by the Irish Republican Army, and the British forces in Ireland. Going back into history, Britain had been occupying Ireland since the Middle Ages. The Irish, however, had been driving them out until the independence movement came about in the 1920s because they do not want to be associated with Britain. The essay entitled The Closing of the (North) American Mind by Robert Nielsen conveys the issues on Marxist literary theory as these issues regarding struggles are evident in the text.
