Unions are an organization that was set up by employees for employees. They have a collective goal that is to provide a better workplace, better wages and benefits. They were first created to ensure that there was worker safety and to allow for employees to have a word in the company. They gave employees the power to negotiate for other benefits through a collective bargaining agreement, where both employers and employee representatives try to reach agreements for the best possible work situations for both sides. From listening to what my parents had to say, it seemed as if labor unions were something that twenty or thirty years ago needed to be formed. Something my mom had mentioned was that there were a man who worked at GM and was in charge of opening a door and was making over $50 an hour. I found this to be very interesting especially because while the door is not being operated, they are sitting around and not working. When they were receiving this much an hour, they then began to feel entitled and would not go out of their way to help when help was needed. This makes me think back to when GM had to be bailed out by the government and wonder if they were using their resources effectively. Granted, this is not completely the union’s fault, but when they would not get what they were looking for from the company, they would go on strike. This was an effective way for the unions to get what they are wanting because when they go on strike, any member that is in the union is required to go on strike and not continue to work.
