This statement from John B. Watson is addressing the fact that he believed that humans are not restricted to their biological traits. He also stated that although he recognized that there was not factual evidence to support this theory he still believed there was validity. It is interesting to consider that John Watson felt strong enough on this concept as to step outside the “safe” way of thinking. In the statement, Watson made a clear connection to his beliefs of nurture when he stated that he could train the infants regardless of their abilities, or other biological factors.

The Nurture vs. Nature has been a long standing debate amongst psychologists. This psychological controversy questions whether or not the environment has more or less to do with the outcome of a child’s psychological development than the genetics involved. The nurture side of the argument is highly illustrated by the memoir The Other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore, due to the fact that both of their lives although starting off similar, ended dramatically different.
The nature versus nurture theory is a way to distinguish whether certain traits or characteristics of individuals are impacted more by biological means or environmental means. What the “nature” part signifies in the the theory is that we are more impacted by heredity and biological effects of our personality and what defines us as a person. What “nurture” signifies is that environmental factors have a more powerful impact on our lives and personality. As we mostly know, most things aren’t black and white, and so it’s hard ro determine which type of factors is more effective. Most people believe that it’s a blend of both nature and nurture that makes us who we are.
One of the great controversial debates in Psychology is determining if characteristics and behavior are primarily due to genetics or the environment. We can now readily accept that genes determine our eye color, height, blood type, and other biological factors. Do these same genes that determine anatomy also determine our tendency towards traits such as violence, homosexuality or alcoholism? Some Psychologists, such as Freud, will argue that the home environment is primarily responsible for molding personality, while others cry genotype. There have been countless studies to find out if our destiny is written in our genes or determined by circumstance. Attempting to ascertain whether people are genetically programmed to be good-natured or prone to violence, sober or alcoholic, homosexual or heterosexual has perplexed man since the beginning of history. Nature vs. nurture purists believe that we are either molded entirely by our surroundings or our genetic make-up, however, it is not necessarily so black and white. Characteristics such as homosexuality, alcoholism, and violence are determined by both environmental and genetic factors.
One of the longest debated issues in Psychological development is the Nature verses Nurture issue. The argument of whether cognitive development is based primarily on genetic makeup otherwise known as Nature, or the Nature argument; or whether development is based primarily on influenced learning from the environment, otherwise known as nurture, or the nurture argument. The definition of Cognitive Development is: “The process of acquiring intelligence and increasingly advanced thought and problem-solving ability from infancy to adulthood.” (Dictionary) There is a third theory of cognitive development derived from Nature theory and Nurture theory combined, known as the Nature plus Nurture theory.
The classic debated topic of Nature versus Nurture has been and will always be a quarrelsome subject in the scientific world. Meaning, the issue of the level to which environment and heredity sway behavior and development in a person. Nature can be defined as, behaviors due to heredity. This means the behaviors is based on the inherited makeup of an individual and is an influence of the growth and development of that individuals’ all through life. On the other hand nurture is causes of behaviors that are environmental. This Intel’s the influence is from the individual’s parents, siblings, family, friends and all other experiences that individual exposed to during life. However, these concept of ideas supports the inborn genetic framework, inherited from our parents, is the sole influential factor in our behavioral characteristics. These two conflicting viewpoints have created a whole host of thoughts, assumptions, and opinion in psychology. For the reason, the distinction between nature and nurture are not enough to put one overlapping the other.
In conclusion, with regards to the evidence of the interactive nature of genes and environment on the individual's development as discussed above, I believe that both nature and nurture plays a part in the individual's development.
As of now, we know that both nature and nurture play important roles in human development, but we have not known yet whether we are developed majorly because of nature or due to nurture. I have noticed many times in my past experiences now that I have a child of my own I see a lot of nature vs nurture in our surroundings.
