James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States. He was born November 19, 1831, in a log cabin at Orange Township, Ohio (known today as Moreland Hills, Ohio). He died September 19, 1881, in Elberon, New Jersey (Summers, 2017, 1). His Father was Abram Garfield and his Mother was Eliza Ballou Garfield. His father died when he was two and he was left helping his widowed mother work her farm outside Ohio. James didn't want to be a farmer. Instead he dreamed of being a sailor so he ran away at sixteen to work on canal boats. However, he became extremely ill from accidentally falling into the water so many times that he had to return home.
