James Garfield was a Union army general who fought in the Battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh, and Chickamauga, and would later become the President of the United States for 200 days. He was a self-made man who was an important contributor in the Civil War due to his bravery, leadership skills, and appropriate radicalism. James Garfield was born on November 19, 1831, in Orange, Ohio, in a log cabin. His father died only two years after his birth, so his mother raised him along with his older siblings while still managing the family farm. In conclusion, Ulysses S. Grant lived an extraordinary life because of his intelligent military intellect. During the Civil War, this man was able to give the Union hope for a victory against the highly trained military leader, Robert E. Lee. The achievement earned him the presidency position for two terms, although he struggled to get the country functioning with unity. Grant will be remembered for his exceptional military success by guiding the Union troops through multiple battles and holding the position of the 18th president of the United States of America.
Throughout history there have been many great leaders. Many leaders who have changed the shape of America and also soldiers of today’s Army. One leader that comes to mind and has shaped me into the leader I am today is Abraham Lincoln. When I look at Abraham Lincoln and what he has done, I think of what Army Leadership manual ADRP 6-22 defines what a leader should be and how leadership is based off of attributes and competencies.

Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822, the son of Hannah Simpson and Jesse Grant, the owner of a tannery. Taken to nearby Georgetown at the age of one, he was educated in local and boarding schools. In 1839, under the name of Ulysses Simpson instead of his original Hiram Ulysses, he was appointed to West Point. Graduating 21st in a class of 39 in 1843, he was assigned to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. There he met Julia Dent, a local planter's daughter, whom he married after the Mexican War.

This was evident with Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship, Tom and Daisy’s struggling marriage, and Gatsby expecting so much of Daisy and wanting her to be the person she once was. The theme of this novel is to acknowledge the past, but do not recreate and live in the past because then you will not be living in the present, taking advantage of new opportunities.

Although the Tenure of Office Act that got Andrew Johnson impeached was unconstitutional, this does not mean that he did not deserve to get impeached. Johnson was not a good president because he let personal issues of revenge on aristocrats and viewpoints of slavery blind him. Johnson would also have a stubborn personality that did not aid him in his path for reconstruction against the radical republicans. He would let feelings get in the way of his reason that made him the only president to be forced out of office due to breaking a law that he knowingly deified and would end in his demise igniting “ridicule” by the American people (H.A. Tompkins).

One may look down the line of Presidents of the United States and cannot say the same for about half or more of them. Johnson, who was born and raised in Stonewall, Texas. He was born in a small farmhouse on the Pedernales River (President Lyndon B. Johnson's Biography). There was a town nearby that was named Johnson City, named after the family due to their farming and ranching abilities. He struggled a lot in when he went to school (Lyndon B. Johnson). No doubt, famous historical figure Abraham Lincoln was a key figure for the United States during its Civil War. Whenever he’s spoken of in the educational system, he’s known as the man who freed the slaves. During Lincoln’s presidency, he implemented an order that would forever affect the slaves and the outcome of the Civil War. On September 22, 1862, he released the preliminary announcement for the Emancipation Proclamation. It eventually went into full effect on January 1st, 1863, during the second year of the Civil War. As President Lincoln signed the proclamation on New Year 's day in his office, he quoted, “I never felt more certain, that I was doing right, than signing this paper.”
