Celebrity worship is a term given to those who obsess over one or more celebrity. Jake Halpern's "The Popular Crowd," discusses how loneliness increases the likelihood of someone worshiping celebrities. Worshiping of celebrities is not necessarily bad, it can be helpful for those who have a social need that they need satisfied. However, this worshiping can sometimes lead to stalking and violence towards celebrities. Once this happens celebrities are put in danger. Some celebrities receive phone calls, letters, emails, and more from stalkers. They might not feel like this is a sign of danger, but it is. In order for celebrities to remain safe, they need to be educated about dangers that come with having fans.
People are increasingly turning to para-social relationships because their social needs are not being met. A para-social relationship is a one sided relationship based on an illusion of a connection to another person. Although out the celebrities’ career they face the brutality of paparazzi. They knew that the lifestyle came with paparazzi and other nuisances that have their own opinions. However, nobody initially wants to be hounded all the time and mistreated. A celebrity’s main ambition in life is to fulfill their passion. It is true that the constant attention in the public eye is beneficial for their career, but is the slander and derision worth it all, in other words, is bad news really good news? You cannot force them into the spot light when they aren’t seeking attention. A celebrity’s role is to perform, entertain and persuade.
The final category of stalker is not lovelorn. He is the vengeful stalker. These stalkers become angry with their victims over some slight, real or imagined. Politicians, for example, get many of these types of stalkers who become angry over some piece of legislation or program the official sponsors. But, disgruntled ex-employees can also stalk, whether targeting their former bosses, co-workers or the entire company. Some of these angry stalkers are psychopaths, i.e. people without conscience or remorse. Some are delusional, (most often paranoid), and believe that they, in fact, are the victims. In addition, if someone was fallowing you, taking pictures and bullying you every day single day, you would instantly report them to the police and they would without a doubt get the stalkers arrested, and they would get a restraining order. But if a celebrity calls the cops saying that there is someone following them and harassing them, no one is willing to protect them, because they are not able to stop the paparazzi for good. Parasocial relationships are one-sided friendships that are formed in which one person is acknowledged, but the other person is unaware of the other’s existence. Some people develop these relationships to compensate for the lack of activity in their social lives, and other form these bonds because of pure admiration or respect. Unfortunately, denial is a common characteristic which results in many stalkers not seeking help. There are laws set in place and victim management that reduce violence and stalker contact. Stalking is a crime in United States, New Zealand, Australia and many European countries. However, places like England and Wales do not consider stalking to be a crime (Economist). In the US, police offices can search an individual suspected as a stalker without a search warrant. Cops also perform the "Knock and Talk" strategy which is when policemen gives the stalker a warning to scare them. While the cops tell the individual to stop, they see if the suspected stalker poses any threat. They also should learn about the suspect as much as possible (Maxey). If they seem dangerous, they may have surveillance of the suspect to be prepared for any violent acts. Victims are asked to stop all contact with the suspect, keep a log every time the stalker tries to contact, call the police to reports incidents, obtain restraining order, change phone number, change up routines, tell family, tell friends, trace suspicious calls, and avoid places where the stalker would be
Stalking involves threatening behaviors and harassment. It is not the type of actions that should be taken lightly because it can lead to much more violent behaviors. This is why stalking is a very important topic to address when discussing intimate violence. All too often stalking will lead to further violence by not only strangers but acquaintances and former partners. It can also become a toxic situation where harm or death results (Meadows, 2010). Stalking cases can vary in several ways. For instance, the way the stalking takes place and/or the motives behind the stalking.
