In the United States, the process of having an abortion has been a controversial topic for many years. Even though an abortion is legal, Americans believe abortions are only morally correct when used for medical reasons. The word “abortion” can be defined various ways depending on a person’s perspective. Abortion is defined by Oxford as “the act of giving untimely birth to offspring, premature delivery, miscarriage; the procuring of premature delivery so as to destroy offspring” (Dionisio). The National Abortion Federation defines it as “a medical abortion is one that is brought about by taking medications that will end a pregnancy, which ends a pregnancy by emptying the uterus (or womb) with special instruments” (Dionisio). Another example is The National Right to Life Organization’s definition: “any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in surgical or chemical abortion” (Dionisio). Viewpoints of abortion are broken down into two different groups: Pro-choice and Pro-life. Supporters of Pro-choice believe that an abortion is a right to women (Should Abortion Be Legal). They also feel that government and religious values should not have control over the decision to have one (Should Abortion Be Legal). Even though Pro-choice advocates support abortion, some believe in it only being used as the last option, while others believe it can be used for any situation (Should Abortion Be Legal). Pro-choice versus pro-life argues over the issue of what should be the right stance when dealing with the life of an unborn child. From the perspective of a person who is pro-choice, they believe that “individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems, just as long as they don’t violate the independence of others.” Pro-choice also argues that the government should not have the right to decide whether a woman should exterminate her pregnancy or not. From their viewpoint, they believe that what should be legal in the eyes of the government is contraception use, celibacy, abstinence, and abortion for the first two trimesters of pregnancy. On the stance of pro-life, they argue that the government has a right to protect this regardless of any situation.
Abortion is a very controversial and sensitive topic in today’s society. Two different sides to this argument is pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life proponents believe in the right to life for unborn fetuses saying that abortion should be considered murder regardless of how far along in the pregnancy the woman is. People that support a pro choice feel that women should have the right to either keep or terminate their pregnancy. For them not being able to have that right is unconstitutional and results in women thinking that they have no control over their reproductive lives. On the other hand, those who are pro-life feel that abortion is a right that should never be exercised because the practice of abortion is murder of an innocent life. Most of this debate stems from the difference in the definition of life between the two groups. Pro-lifers believe that life starts at conception whereas pro-choicers believe that life does not begin until birth. Abortion has been a controversial topic in the U.S ever since it became legal in 1973 after the Roe v. Wade case. Abortion is defined as the, “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” Pro-life supporters believe that abortion is unethical and argue that it is the mother’s responsibility to own up to her actions. They also argue that there is always the option of adoption, and that abortion could be very dangerous. I am pro-life and believe that the government doesn’t have the right to decide what a woman can or can’t do with her body.
Those who adamantly oppose abortion are regarded as pro-life and those who are supporters of abortion are considered pro-choice by contemporary standards. Even among those who advocate abortion, there are discrepancies in their views such as up until what point in the pregnancy is abortion morally permissible. In my opinion, abortion is morally permissible at any stage in a woman’s pregnancy. This is ethically acceptable because a woman should have the right to control what goes on within her body. Along with this, fetuses are still far from personhood (having the qualities of a human being); therefore, we cannot liken abortion to any variety of murderous activity.

Currently almost twenty-five percent of pregnancies in the United States are aborted. About one forth of people who abort are teenagers, fifty-seven percent are younger than 25, and almost eighty percent are unmarried. During the first trimester is when most of the abortions take place. Only about ten percent are performed later in the pregnancy (Slife, 1998, p.329). Abortions go back as far as Ancient Greece where it was used as a type of population control. Then in the Roman Times men had total control over the procedure. “Man could give law-enforced command that his wife have an abortion, or he could punish or divorce his wife for having one without his consent” (Encyclopedia, 1995, p.43).
In my argumentative coursework I am arguing that abortion is wrong and not to be mistaken with 'Abortion should be made illegal.' I will explain later why I have made this statement. Abortion is the termination of an unborn child in its mother's womb for up to twenty four weeks of the pregnancy or in special circumstances e.g. Disability diagnosis a termination right up until the mother goes in to labour. I think the above definition is an easier and less harsh way of saying that abortion is the murdering of a human being.
