He ran barefoot in the darkness digging his soles into the soft grainy sand. It was pitch black, not even the Moon lit his pathway. His breath came in short sharp bursts matching his steps. The path he knew by memory got steeper, the deeper his feet dug into the shifting sands. Pebbles now embedded themselves into his feet, he altered his footing until the relief of sand which felt like a mother’s caress. He needed to run faster for they were behind him, he knew he hadn’t long as he heard the noise of the engines behind him. The convoy was behind him, gaining speed like a pride of lionesses on the hunt for their prey, he was half running, half scrambling over unseen obstacles rushing away faster than OJ’s white bronco. Closer. And closer. He couldn’t stop they said he would be safe upon the hill. He was alert with all his senses kicking into full drive, as he scuttled through the tenebrosity, relying solely on his memory of the trail. Then suddenly as though his sixth sense had activated his heart beat loudly adrenaline took over as fear was starting to encompass him, the noise from the would be capturs now trailed behind him, he had no other option other than to get to the apex of the cliff, and then he would have a feeling of comfort. But the harder he ran the harder the run became, the more toll it took on his body. A blinding beam shot behind him through through a thicket of bushes, it came from them. They were on his tail but he could not detour now into the oblivion of the forest,not now, not when he is so close. His limbs and his heart were having ongoing battle to see which one would give in first. He gritted his teeth in his pain? Determination? He didn't even know as he pushed onwards through the arduous trail to salvation. Knowing he barely had anything left in the tank he focused on his climb, which was the only thing that could keep his mind off the pain. He took a deep breath in, gulping at the cold sea air as he heard the serene crashing waves below. An engine roared louder behind him He frantically looked around the the peak of of the cliff, for the sanctuary he was promised, but nothing. The Moon surfaced from behind the clouds casting a mesmerising light upon the face of the cliff showing the safest path off this cliff, falling into sea. He stood there. Right on the edge. He stopped. Knowing there was no way back. This may be his final choice. Torch light now was seen blinking up and down the track he’d just climbed as they followed his trail gaining more and more on
