As America keep growing things change and others don’t, such as racism and the discrimination of people. Cheerios a well-known cereal that is consumed by all ages has continued to spread happiness and health. This specific brand of cereal is known for being heart healthy and promoting a family environment in their ads. The question is if this brand is so popular why did an interracial family put into an ad cause such a backlash?
The commercial starred a small family the father being African American, the mother being Caucasian and the daughter a mix of the two with curly hair. The United States has become more progressive with accepting the differences between people, there still are many who disapprove of non-traditional relationships. A percentage of commentators were outraged that Cheerios depicted this interracial family. It is sad to see but, because interracial relationships were only more widely accepted 20 to 30 years ago there is going to be some type of backlash. YouTube and other websites that published/acknowledged the ad received all of these comments online because people had the free will to describe such hatred. Commenting online gave these people the ability to speak their mind without revealing who they were and what they looked like. The comments made about the family were unwarranted and unnecessary. They were just made by people who wanted to be hateful and not celebrate that other were included. The southern area is more known for their traditional ways while, they are not the only states that have racism. Racism will continue to be a problem as long as people do not want to learn about what others go through and their lifestyle. By commercials being more progressive things will slowly change just as the world. Though the ad was pulled off the air it was able to reach so many families but, also make them feel like American is still a melting pot. This short video demonstrates everyday scenarios. The video takes the State Farm Insurance commercial and adds a twist to it. It starts with a white man and black man in an office having a normal conversation. The white man starts making racist comments without realizing it. The black man naturally points out the white mans offensive comments and the white man becomes uncomfortable and scared. The white man then panics and sings “Oops I was racist black guy come here” (“Dear White People”). He sings the words in the style of the State Farm Insurance Jingle and a well dressed black man appears only to back up the white man by saying the white mans comments were not meant to be racist. After the “Racism Agent” argues for the white mans case the black man agrees the white man was all right and the agent disappears. This video is clearly parody because of the State Farm Insurance jingle and the commercial concept. From the man singing the jingle his own way, to the “Racism Agent” showing up to meet the needs of the white man, it is exactly the same. This video is undoubtedly a horatian piece because it is extremely laughable. It also demonstrates how people can be racist by saying simple things without even realizing it. This also demonstrates that people should be more careful about what they say and how they say it. Living in a world where African Americans are judged because of their skin color, while whites are passed by with no other thought is confusing. What do people think when they see me? I am biracial, and because of this, I’ve faced the struggle of having to explain my races to those who can’t tell, or just make an incorrect assumption. It’s not a bad thing, having two races and two cultures, because I’ve been open to multiple traditions my entire life, but sometimes it’s hard not being considered a whole person because I’m not considered one race or the other. Being biracial has shaped my life experience and the way I see the world in countless ways.
When the U.S prepares for the Super Bowl, Americans become excited for two things, football and commercials. This February, the NFL had its 48th annual Super Bowl in conjunction with the highly anticipated commercials. There was one commercial released by a world famous soda producer, Coca Cola, which has created much controversy. Coca Cola took a unique take on the classic “America the Beautiful” song that has caused quite an uproar regarding prejudice, discrimination, and ethnicity in America.
This commercial is effective because it grabs the reader’s attention and makes them watch the commercial and hear the message at the end. Of course, some people do not appreciate this commercial because of it use of Charlotte McKinney’s body and lack of minorities, but this not change the fact that it is an attention grabber. Jude released this commercial to receive funds in 2014, they stereotyped the types of races by only including white and black children in their commercials to show their superiority. This action shows that St. Jude is stereotyping against all other races besides white and black. It was very ironic that they did not include the latino, middle eastern, and eastern races in their commercial. This type of stereotype made by St. Jude's refers that all other races besides white and black many not donate lots of money to them because they are not as rich or superior as them. St. Jude’s connection to only a few races causes all of the other races to feel left out and not be able to connect to the children’s lives as opposed to the white and black races.
This company has made a grave mistake by releasing this commercial that will take some time to come back from, if ever. The communication of this ad should have clearly been thought out more. Clearly, using a white celebrity such as Kendall Jenner was not a good idea. Through -out the entire advertisement, it demonstrated the beauty and skill sets. Instead of using a white person to be the main source of the commercial, it would have been more received if using someone that clearly understood and made it clear what the black lives matter movement was all about. Introduction When my sister decided to partake in an interracial relationship she was met with mixed feelings from various family members. Most of the time, when an advertisement is made to be racist on purpose, it is done so for the sake of humor. However, to the people that are affected by racial discrimination, it remains incredibly hard to view these advertisements in a humorous way. A source from Desginmatic.com says, “The idea that racism in advertising can be of good may be laughable. However, there’s a major difference between the multicultural marketing practices of the 1920s and today’s racial stereotyping in advertising” (desginmantic.com). Being something available to all students for viewing, the communication employed by the advertisement is cunning and deceptive. The appeal to ethics in the Ben and Jerry's "brownies that do good" advertisement is simple tactic to distract the viewer. David Wall in "It Is and It Isn't" refers to this as a social assumption which builds off of cultural expectations. There are countless concealed messages and symbols within the Ben and Jerry's advertisement that contain these social assumptions and require closer examination of content.
