Instinct or Rule
People always expect you to know what is right from what is wrong. That is how we live our lives. The only problem is that what the law says is the incorrect thing can sometimes feels like the best idea. If someone breaks the law, others still support them and approve of what they were doing. This can be found in John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Tom Joad is a criminal in his hometown. So why is it that we still support him and hope for the best? After killing a man and spending his time in prison, the readers of John Steinbeck's novel, The Grapes of Wrath, are supposed to love him. Huckleberry proves to his partner in crime that he can be trustworthy, no matter what it takes. It does not matter if he has to break the law to keep his promise.

Huckleberry Finn most likely has a hard time in life deciding what is right and what is wrong. "Ethics or morals is the study of what we ought to do; i.e. what is the right way to act and what is the wrong" (Webmaster). Since Finn grew up with his father in an unsteady household, he was probably not taught properly right from wrong. This would cause Huckleberry to have a hard time listening to the law because morality and the law would not be similar in his mind.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and The Grapes of Wrath written by John Steinbeck use the idea of law versus morality to carry through the novel. We support characters that do bad things because we have sympathy towards them.
