Over the course of human history, we as a species have progressed an unimaginably large amount. The source of this progression? Innovation. Without innovation, there is no progression. This then begs another question: why do we innovate? The answer to this is simply that we have issues that we must overcome. We have to innovate to solve our problems, but then those leads to more problems, and therefore more innovation. Although this is a large scale example, the spirit of invention is also important in everyday life as we face our own smaller-scale problems. Without invention, how can we expect to get anywhere? How can we ever accomplish anything, or resolve anything? Without invention, we wouldn’t have electricity, automobiles, or television. Although it may solve a problem, it is to the detriment of others. In the story “The Cask of the Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, a man by the name of Montresor seeks revenge on a guy named Fortunato. Montresor elaborately plans to murder Fortunato, telling him that there is a large amount of a rare wine called amontillado in his vault. He then lures Fortunato into the vault and kills him by chaining him up and building a wall between the two of them with his masonry skills. He then throws a torch into the chamber and never hears from Fortunato again. “I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells. My heart grew sick; it was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so. I hastened to make an end of my labour. I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up” (Poe, 62). This shows that without his ingenuity, he wouldn’t have been able to sate his revenge.
