I want to inform you about your health condition called varicose veins, but I'll first give you some background information to help you understand this condition more clearly. Blood vessels carry your blood throughout your body. There are five main types of blood vessels: arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins, but I'll be informing you on arteries, capillaries, and veins. Most arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, except for pulmonary arteries, which carry blood to the lungs for oxygen. Arteries have three thick layers of rigid walls, which allow them to contract and expand in order to handle the high pressure, since blood has the highest pressure when it’s being pumped out of the heart. When your heart pumps blood against the walls of your blood vessels it’s called blood pressure. Your doctor must have taken your blood pressure using a blood pressure monitor, so I’ll let u know what the number means. Your blood pressure is represented with two numbers, the systolic and diastolic, and measured in units of millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Systolic pressure is the number on top for example 120 from the blood pressure 120/80 mmHg. Systolic tells you how much pressure is is being exerted upon the artery walls, as your heart pumps blood. Diastolic is the number on the bottom, for example 80 from the blood pressure 120/80 mmHg. Diastolic tells you how much pressure is being exerted on your artery walls while your heart’s at rest between beats. A healthy blood pressure should be under 120/80. If your systolic pressure is in the 120-139 range, or if your diastolic pressure is in the 80-89 range, then that is defined as having prehypertension. This means that the blood pressure is higher than normal, but not high enough to be called hypertension (high blood pressure).
