CONCEPT 9: PREVENTION OF MUSCULOSKELETAL PROBLEMS IN NURSING PROFESSION.
This concept is taken from Block 4, Module 11 which is entitled as ‘Assessment of musculoskeletal system’.
The musculoskeletal system can also be referred to as locomotive system. It mainly comprises of muscles, skeleton, tendons, cartilage, ligaments and joints. The musculoskeletal system supports the body, aids in movement of the body and protect the vital organs in the body.
9.1 Personal context
Musculoskeletal problems are conditions that affect the bones, joints and muscles resulting in pain, inability to move the body or stiffness, swelling etc. Musculoskeletal problems affect different parts of the body which include the neck, wrists, knees, shoulders, back, waist etc. The nursing care involves handling of patients and giving adequate or complete care. In nursing care of patients, some techniques are involved which include lifting, moving or repositioning of patients. Continuous use of these techniques most times affect the body resulting in pains and body aches. The arteries supply blood rich in oxygen to the body, the veins direct deoxygenated blood from the capillaries back to the heart. These roles make up the circulatory function. Blood flow through these blood vessels can be disrupted resulting in peripheral vascular diseases. These diseases occur as a result of narrowing or blocking of the blood vessels. The musculoskeletal system offers support and stability for your body so we can properly function and move around. Different types of muscle within the muscular system include cardiac, skeletal, and smooth. The reason our bodies are capable of producing movement is because of the way our muscles contract. Our adult skeletal structure is made up of 206 bones that all differ in shapes and sizes. The composing parts that make up the system include the bones, joints, and muscles that all connect so we’re capable of moving. These components allow for our bodies to maintain a stable structure that can keep us upright. The skeletal system assists the muscular system to provide movement for the body. Certain muscles that are attached to bones contract and pull on the bones resulting in movement.
In this case I will discuss evidence based nursing problem which has a very big impact to the nurses which is evidence- based practices for safe patient handling and movement. Evidence-based practice is critically appraised and scientifically proven evidence for delivering quality health care to a specific population. This is very important because it will help me in reduction of injuries that are associated with patient handling. There are very many approaches that can be used or rather are used in patient handling. These includes manual patient lifting, classes in body mechanics, training in safe lifting techniques, and back belts. Amazingly there has been a strong evidence that this methods still they do not help in reducing nurses or caregiver’s injuries.
The muscular system is important in the daily life to the humans. The muscular system is the body's network of tissues that control movement of the body. Walking, running, and jumping, all of these actions propelling the body through space are possible only because of the contraction and relaxation of muscles. These movements, however, are not the only ones directed by the muscular activity. Muscles make it possible to stand, sit, speak, and blink. Even more, were it not for muscles, blood would not move through the digestive system. Muscles are the machine of the body, allowing it to work.
Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). A Licensed Practical Nurse has various of roles that they have to manage on a day to day basis, such as being an advocate for their patients, an educator, being a counselor, a consultant, researcher, collaborator, and even a manager depending on what kind of work exactly that you do and where. The three functions of the skeletal system are to support, to allow movement, and to protect. The skeleton is the framework of the body and also cradles its soft organs, with it the body would be just a jelly mass it wouldn’t have no definite shape and would just collapse. The goal for nurses as a profession is not only to be “patient advocates” but also assist the patient to learn and gain the necessary skills to achieve the best level of functioning for the patient based on their current illness. In order to help a patient achieve their optimal level of functioning the nurse must work with the patient and the interdisciplinary team to create a collaborative plan that is logical for the patient. Through examining a musculoskeletal disorder case study #35 from Preusser (2008), one can create a critical pathway for the patient, S.P. a 75 year old female, with severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and admitted to the orthopedic ward for a hip fracture status post fall (p. 183). Since the patient’s needs is unique and complex the nurse must tailor a plan with the patient which will include “…assessments, consultations, treatments, lifestyle changes, disease education…” in order for the patient have the most appropriate evidence-based care and make informed decisions when it is necessary (Oliver, 2006, p. 28). The aim for the nurse caring for the S.P. is to help prepare the patient for an upcoming procedure and focus care to the patient by gathering necessary information about her while. Collaboration with the patient, family members, rehabilitation, medical and surgical team about the treatment plans can help us provide proper patient’s care by utilizing actions and interventions within the scope and standards of the nursing practice.
The general idea of, K, is that a nurse must have knowledge in the diversity of cultures, ethics, and education. The significance of this faction being that if the nurse is cognizant of the patient 's culture, beliefs, family values, support systems, and education level, a more thorough and comprehensive plan of care can be formulated. The premise of, S, is that a nurse must be skilled in the ability to communicate with and advocate for the patient, assess for and properly treat pain, and incorporate the needs and concerns of the patient and their family. The significance of this group and development of these skills include the achievement of pain control, increased rehabilitation periods, and an increase in patient/family satisfaction. The theme of, A, requires that a nurse maintains an open attitude toward the patient and to respect and validate the nurse-patient relationship, which will aid in a positive nurse-patient

The musculoskeletal system is comprised of bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, fascia and muscles. Together these body parts work to establish a framework that is the musculoskeletal system. This framework is what gives the body its shape, form, and figure. It stabilizes the body as well as supplies the structural support. The musculoskeletal body features not only provide a framework for your body but allows your ability to create movement. These movements are monitored by the musculoskeletal components which then determine your degree of flexibility. Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Registered nurses work in many different settings and they carry out many different routines. As a registered nurse you could be exposed to many different opportunities. My goal is to be a registered nurse but, I need to learn a lot. Becoming a being a registered nurse requires a lot of hard work and effort but, if I focus on my goal I will be able to achieve it.

Having strength means that someone has the physical and mental power to perform things in a successful manner. The muscular system is the set of all the muscles that make up the human body. It is an extensive system of muscles and nervous tissue, which is distributed all through the body. In total, the human body consists of approximately 650 muscles (Shier, Butler, Lewis, 2009). The muscular system is divided into three types of muscle: cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and skeletal muscle (p.212).
