To start off, you may be thinking, “what is eye cancer?” and according to American Cancer society, it is “cancer that starts in the eye”. That does not give you a clear definition of what cancer is though. So I went to The National Cancer Institute’s website and searched up the meaning of cancer. The definition of cancer is “a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues” which is “spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems” and can cause tumors. So eye cancers many types of tumors that occur in various parts of the eye.

Melanoma is the most common cancer inside of the eye (intraocular). Melanoma, also called uveal melanoma, is when malignant (cancer) cells grow uncontrollably in your iris or tissues of your eye; thus, causing a tumor to grow. The tumors usually consist of two types of cells: spindle (long and thins cells) and epithelioid cells (round with straight edges). The primary types of melanoma is iris, choroidal, and ciliary body melanoma. Iris melanoma is production of malignant cells in the iris, so that would mean that choroidal melanoma is production of malignant cells in the choroid that spread to other places in the eye and ciliary body melanoma is the production of malignant in the ciliary body but this is usually hard to diagnose because it is similar to other eye diseases. Malignant melanoma develops when the melanocytes no longer respond to normal control mechanisms of cellular growth and are capable of invasion locally or spread to other organs in the body (metastasis), where again they invade and compromise the function of that organ.

The true question here is what is cancer? Where did the word “cancer” come from? According to “The History of Cancer”, the word cancer came from the father of medicine Hippocrates, a Greek physician. Hippocrates used Greek words such as carcinos and carcinoma, these words were actually used to describe a crab which Hippocrates thought a tumor resembled. Even though cancer is a very old and well known disease, there is still no official cure for cancer.

It is a very serious cancer that most often occurs in the skin and less frequently in the eye or in the lining of the nose, mouth, or genitals. Melanoma begins in melanocytes, cells that make a pigment called melanin. Both light- and dark-skinned people have melanin, which gives colour to the skin, hair, and parts of the eye.
Kids are meant to be happy, play outside, go to school, and have fun. They aren’t meant to sit in hospitals, losing weight by the pound, carrying around IV poles filled with poison. It’s ridiculous and immature that we don’t have a cure for childhood cancer. The only “treatment” that we have is chemotherapy- a chemical that seems to help fight off cancer. Chemo doesn’t just fight off cancer cells though- it fights off healthy cells in your blood, mouth, digestive system, and hair follicles. The most frustrating thing about childhood cancer is that only 4% of federal funding is exclusively dedicated to childhood cancer research. It is true that more adults get diagnosed with cancer than kids, but does that mean that adults are 96% more important than children? The average age of diagnosis for an adult with cancer is age 67, and the average number of years lost is 15. 15 years are definitely many years, but not that many compared to the average number of years lost for a child- 71. Also, age 67 is a lot older than the average age of diagnoses for a child- age 6. At least the adults get to grow up and have the ability to even have cancer- some of these kids can’t even get through a fifth of their lives.

This enables pieces of the tumor to break off and spread to other places in the body. Over the past few decades cancer has become a very prominent disease. There are many different types of cancer and many different causes for the the disease. Most cancers are because of a genetic mutation. The most common type occur when a cell is dividing. Proto-oncogenes, which are alleles in a normal cells, mutate to form oncogenes. These oncogenes cause cancer because they do not allow the cells to self destruct or become epistatic.
