To start off, you may be thinking, “what is eye cancer?” and according to American Cancer society, it is “cancer that starts in the eye”. That does not give you a clear definition of what cancer is though. So I went to The National Cancer Institute’s website and searched up the meaning of cancer. The definition of cancer is “a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues” which is “spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems” and can cause tumors. So eye cancers many types of tumors that occur in various parts of the eye.

Melanoma is the most common cancer inside of the eye (intraocular). Melanoma, also called uveal melanoma, is when malignant (cancer) cells grow uncontrollably in your iris or tissues of your eye; thus, causing a tumor to grow. The tumors usually consist of two types of cells: spindle (long and thins cells) and epithelioid cells (round with straight edges). The primary types of melanoma is iris, choroidal, and ciliary body melanoma. Iris melanoma is production of malignant cells in the iris, so that would mean that choroidal melanoma is production of malignant cells in the choroid that spread to other places in the eye and ciliary body melanoma is the production of malignant in the ciliary body but this is usually hard to diagnose because it is similar to other eye diseases.
